I'm making my bodice for Scottish games, and used the heaviest weight interfacing available to me, but it's still not as sturdy as I'd like. Can I fuse another layer of interfacing to the first? Ideally I'd put a layer of heavy fabric (duck?) inbetween the outside and lining, but it's not exactly available and I need to finish the bodice for Saturday. Thanks much for the help! |

Yes you can use 2 layers. I have never had to do it but I know others that have.

You probably don't have time to get this but when tailoring, there is a very heavy interfacing that is used in addition to "regular" interfacing in coats and jackets. That might work well for you if you need to do this again. It is usually a heavy woven brownish color with a gray or black thread running through it. I wouldn't want to wash it...so if I used it I would have the garment dry-cleaned. It is usually pad stitched into the garment.

Thanks, Pam - good to know! I'll look for it on my next fabric expedition, as I hope to be making more bodices |

With my costume making hat on I have interfaced heavily! Outer velvet, then two layers of upholstery fabric (+ boning,) and then lining. The upholsery fabric is firm and washable and also cheap as I got a load of off cuts from a furnishing manufacturer. It might be odd having a Sanderton or William Morris insdie your gament, but why worry!

Magot brings up a good point. Have you considered boning your bodice? It doesn't add stiffness but it will make it stand up.

I did wind up doing a double layer of interfacing, which stiffened things up quite a bit, and am adding a bit of boning to it tonight! Then tomorrow I'll finish up with trim and grommets...not historically accurate, I know, but I actually rather like grommets... Thanks for the idea on the upholstery fabric layers as well! I should have some pics of the whole outfit next week, so I'll have to post links and get your opinions |

It is murder hand sewing eyelets especially through all that fabric! You got to give it your awl! I suppose you could always use embroidery floss over them to disguise them. ( I think we're talking about the same thing here, the holes to thread the lacing through?)

Yup, those are the ones. I've thought about doing the embroidery thread over grommets for DH's shirt, as it laces partway up the front - but at this point he'll be lucky if his shirt even gets done; I haven't started it yet! Maybe just sort of a V slash and a drawstring cord will do...if it's cold enough, he'll keep his sweater on all day anyway. |
