Hello Ladies!

My name is Renee and I am really a beginner. I have done a few quilts: a few baby quilts and one Irish Chain. I guess its not really quilting, more like I pieced everything together and tied it instead of actually quilting it. But I really enjoy it so far and want to learn how to do the "quilting part" as soon as I can. I am pretty much teaching myself, so it's been slow-going.

I live in New Mexico and have a 13 month old son! I hope to make some new friends whom I may share ideas with and hopefully ask for help on occasion!

Sincerely,
Renee

Welcome to the site. There are lots of quilting books out there that can help you "if " you have no one to teach you. The library has quite a few as a rule. I think one of Eleanor Burns would be a good start. Are there any classes for quilting in your area ? I'm sure there is a class on this site also. Oh, there is nothing wrong with a tied quilt, just another way of doing a quilt. Good luck & don't give up. Theresa

Thanks for the replies and the warm welcome! I hope to be getting to know you all very well. I actually went to a quilt show over the weekend and found out that there are several quilt stores here in my little town of Clovis, which excites me. They even offer classes from time to time so I may get some pointers.

Thanks again!!
Renee

Renee, the best way to spend money and learn is to hang around a quilt store. LOL. I spend every time I go in one, whether I should or not.

I have a quilt I almost have done. I need to sew the blocks together but they have ravelled edges. When I zigzag the edges aren't even and therefore makes the seams not even. How am I suppose to do the raveled edges so all the blocks are the same?

Hi Esther, when your blocks are all done you should square all your blocks. Take your 12" square ruler to finish cutting and to make even. If you don't have a large square you can use your regular ruler. May I ask why you zigzag your seams together? just curious.

Hello,
I was zigzagging the blocks before I sewed them together because I thought the edges would keep raveling. So, I don't have to zigzag? I have only zigzaged five of them.
I am very new at quilting. I have made a star quilt a long time ago. The quilt I am doing now is a stamped quilt with X's and I embroidery that. It is a beautiful pattern.
So, anytime I sew pieces together I don't have to zigzag for raveled edges?

Hi, no you don't have to zigzag, you will be finishing the blocks properly when you square them so that will take care of the raveling for you. Your quilt sounds really nice.

Thanks for your help with zigzaging quilts. It will surely save time not to have to zigzag all the time.

I love tying quilts with decorative stitches. My machine has a heart stitch on it that I like to use with varigated thread when making a quilt for a girl.

If you want to give the quilting part a try and have a walking foot, crosshatching is pretty easy or just plain diagonal stitching using the rotuary ruler to mark the top with before you actually pin the layers together (remember to pin closely to avoid puckers on the backing). Free motion takes practice so just use a plain piece of fabric like a whole cloth quilt and don't start out on your quilt top and remember that marked lines wash away so if it is not on the line exactly - don't tell them and they won't know.

I love Diane Gaudynski's Guide to Machine Quilting and Sue Nickels help calm my nerves and Jane Townswick's Easy Machine Quilting has the most wonderful projects to look at and Harriet Hargrave started it all but the photos in her book were intimidatingly perfect.

I would recommend having several books on the subject and join a quilt group if you can - mentors are underrated. I look forward to taking a class someday but for now I am just doing what I can.
