My birthday, and of course, Christmas are both coming up, and I wonder which feet would be most beneficial to ask Santa, AKA dear Hubby, for. I know that I need/want a gathering foot or ruffler attachment---not sure if I could use one of the above to both gather and make ruffles???? And if both would work in that manner, which is easiest to operate??? I love to quilt and make clothing for my 3 dds (ie: lots of ruffles) and myself. With my machine came: zigzag foot overedge foot zipper foot satin stitch foot blind hem foot straight stitch foot Auto buttonhole foot overcasting foot embroidering foot--ie for stippling, free motion quilting and I already had a walking foot from previous machine that fits this one And, last question, does anyone know how to operate an elastic attachment foot for sergers? I have a Kenmore serger I bought the elastic foot for, thinking I would never have to thread casing again. HOWEVER, I can't seem to judge how much elastic to use---or how to get it tight and loose enough without lots of fiddling. Quite frankly, it is just faster to sew the casing and use a saftey pin to thread the elastic through. But I feel majorly guilty having asked my dh to purchase it for me for Easter--cuz I can't seem to make it work. Especially, when he asks if I used it to make the girls 15 pairs of pants for school. Sorry this is long. I'm like a kid in a candy store. I just don't want to grab everything--- I want to make wise choices that will work easily, well, and make my sewing even more enjoyable. TIA! Jen, I think that you'll like the ruffler attachment better than the gathering foot. It makes a wonderful ruffle and saves tons of time. There are so many feet out there! It really depends on what kind of sewing you are going to be doing. I really like the rolled hemmer feet. I prefer the straight rolled hemmer over the scalloped. The scalloped come in handy sometimes but the straight rolled hemmer can always be used. I also like the cording feet that can be used to apply all kinds of things to your garment. I don't know if this is available on all machines, but Bernina makes a foot for their machine that has a built in guide for zippers. It is my favorite zipper foot. There are also invisible zipper feet. Although invisible zippers can be put in with a regular zipper foot, some people prefer those. From time to time, you may prefer to use a teflon foot. You might look to see if your machine company has a site with the different types of feet and their uses so you can "window shop". If not, BerninaUSA has a listing of their feet with a brief description that you can view. Many of the Bernina feet are basic feet that would be avail. at any machine company.

What type of sewing machine do you have? I know that Kenmore has a package of specialty feet for around $20 as I have seen it in the store. I like the gathering (aka shirring) foot as one can gather and stitch to the bodice at the same time. I haven't tried that with my ruffler yet. I also have one for the serger which gathers, stitches and finishes in one step. That was a great attachment. That might help you with your serger. Check out your manual or the ABC's of Serging book on how to apply elastic. I still use a casing but apply it with my serger for a RTW look. Happy Stitching!
