I heard alot about this show and finally recorded a couple of episodes because it's on late here. OMG!!!!!   Where did they find these nasty people?? It made feel like my house is REALLY clean. :nervous:
I saw the episodes with the "gum lady" and the one with the British man living with his girlfriend and her family. I've never seen anything like that gum lady before. :whacky:

I have seen this show you are talking about. I just want to know how ANYONE would ever let their house get that state that some of these houses are in!!!!! These people rank right up there with the ones on Clean Sweep, the show where they pick just two rooms to clean out. Why are people such packrats?

( Hey, get out of my closet, that's not junk that my fabric stash!!!)

At least the ones on Clean Sweep just have clutter. (Yea, that's fabric stash in my sewing room too , not clutter. :nah: it's just a little stacked up in places, haha)
The houses on how clean is your house look like a garbage truck backed up to their house and dumped the whole town's trash in there.

Can you believe the one lady had 430 times more bacteria in her refrigerator than in her toilet?? :whacky: There was no flat space in her house without trash on it.

Hmmmmm.... I think I'll clean out my refrigerator today.

I saw this show once. Who would let people and cameras in their home if it was that bad. Definitely not me. It's clutter, dirt and garbage.

I think it is a form of voyeurism, akin to peeking under someone else's bed. There are so many shows that go into people's homes and show the stuff that normally would never come to light.

Jerry Springer is $*&%.He is in it purely or entertainment not to help people.
I like Oprah tho she is not on over here anymore.

Are you refering to the English version of this programme? If you are ther eis a great one with a woman who lets her parrots fly aound the house and they pooh EVERYWHERE and she just leaves it.
We now have a programme here called To Posh to Wash about people who just dont clean themselves.Blurgh!!!!

I watch a show Clean Sweep. It amazes me how much stuff people get into two rooms. All I can think is once the clean sweep crew gets all the stuff out, redo the rooms, put the stuff they are allowed to keep back in, and have sold the other stuff at a yard sale and given to charity. How long does it take these people to get the rooms back to the way they were before the clean sweep crew came in.

I keep my house as clean as it needs to be, if people don't like it, they don't have to come in....
I also don't watch 'reality' shows....no one's life is that interesting. (to me)
I don't care to see how others live, it's none of my business..I don't have to live with'em....

I know how their houses get that way - sloth. My Mum used to make us kids do the housework - nothing wrong with getting the kids to help out, but as we left home she didn't pick up the jobs, just left stuff. I used to go home and scrub and it would not make a dent. I remember before I get marrried my dad was working away for the summer and she got worse and worse. I had to scrape the carpet off the kitchen floor with a shovel it was so stuck down with grease and dog hair. I went one time to help her clean up before my dad came out of hospital to die - it took me 40 minutes to clean the cat s..t off the skirting board in one room. I loved my Mum but she was a pig. My dad came home and berated her for the place being so filthy. It had taken all weekend to clean 2 rooms. After that wekend I went home and had a misscarriage - not related by the way! None of us took our kids to see them intheir house after the were crawling.

After my Dad died there was nothing to stop her getting worse, and I know 2 more families who live the same way - they literally do not see the mess. Their kids do and are embaressed to take anyone home - I can relate to that! It really would not ocur to my friends that people might not want to eat food that comes from their kitchen

Chrys, my DM always said she kept her house clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy. That's been my motto also. We've been healthy and happy in our home, friends and family come to visit, eat and don't complain and they continue to visit so I guess it meets their standards. I don't like any of the reality shows either. There is enough drama/entertainment in my own life, I don't need to watch other people show the world how they live.

Mary, I agree with you about Springer!!!! My DH would turn that show on with the kids ( then small) in the room and I would be right behind him, turning it off!!! I informed him that if he wanted to watch "that white-trash crap" he would have to do it OUT OF THIS HOUSE!!! I would not let my kids watch it, he wasn't going to watch it in the house either. He has since come around to seeing my point, so now we spend our time watching more family programs, and the "how-to" programs. PBS is a big hit here on the weekends along with the History Channel and the Food Channel. If the kids do watch something ,on say MTV, DH or I, or both of us, are right there to watch it with them, and we discuss what is going on with the show, and how we feel as a parent, about what we agree or disagree with the show.
The computer is right in the living room, where I can watch what is going on with it.
My house, it stays picked-up. I need to dust MORE than what I do. Who knows, maybe I wouldn't sneeze so much if I did!!!! My biggest problem is cat hair. I also have one cat that when she gets scolded for doing something wrong, she will sneak behind my DH's recliner and pee on the carpet. It's almost like she's trying to get back at me for scolding her. I keep that carpet cleaner handy to get to it right away, I can not stand the smell of animal urine, or dirty litter boxes. How in the world could someone let stuff like that go untouched for days on end?
All in all, I'm more ashamed of the walls needing a coat of paint, which was done two years ago, than I am if I did have somewhat of a mess, i.e. basket of laundry being folded, shoes, an unfolded afgan sitting around.

I don't have kids at home any more. And I still find myself watching alot of the family stuff on TV. I do like the DIY shows, HGTV, and PBS. They have some good shows and I have gotten lots of ideas. I did paint the whole inside of the house ceiling to floor this summer. Got new carpet in 3 rooms that needed it. My house is pretty clean until you get to my sewing room. My husband does alot of the house work and all the cooking (he is a chef). I just can't believe the people that get on tv with their dirty houses. I could never do that.

From one extreme to another. I have a brother who is so clean, I don't dare sit in his living room with good clothes on. He has plastic around his remote and a sheet by the telelvision. Give me a house where I can put my feet up. I like a clean house, but I want to be comfortable in it.

Shirley, I have 2 brothers that are clean freaks. Don't know where they got it from! One vacuums every day. Neither of them have clutter, dust bunnies, dust etc. Their homes to me are sterile and cold feeling. Me, I only vacuum when absolutely necessary. My home is comfortable, and like I said earlier, clean enough to be healthy but dirty enough to be happy.

Not everyone with a nasty house is simply lazy. There is actually a psychological condition called disposaphobia (http://www.network54.com/Realm/Squalor_Survivors/) where people simply live in squalor. It's very sad and obviously can be a major problem in having relationships.

I am proud of how tidy my house is, considering I have two babies (and I take time to sew most days)! I have found the secret to a tidy house is organization -- everything needs a home -- and CONSTANTLY trying to downsize the amount of stuff I have. I am still improving on reducing my "stuff" but that will probably be a lifelong project. For now I am happy with my home and how I run it, for the most part. Only problem is, I drink a lot of :coffee: to get me through my busy day -- and at night, bring on the glass of red wine! :-)

My poor husband is dealing with just this issue right now. He is trying to move my worthless sister-in-law out of his mother's house and, once my mother-in-law was too ill to go upstairs, the whole second story was about three feet deep in crap.
Then, when my mother-in-law died the whole house started to look that way. In order to sell the house the other siblings have to get the sister-in-law-from-hell and her 12-year-old daughter out.
It has taken more than a month, and about three dumpsters full of junk to the dump. I drove by there yesterday and there is still crap piled on the porch.
I suggested we put her in one of the dumpsters and haul her to the dump too but my husband wouldn't let me.

Organization is the key. This yr I have been minimalising like the t.v. shows say. We have stuff stored for the kids for yrs. Our last one went to college and before he left we went through his things. My basement is full of stuff. This winter I plan to go through it all. What is for garbage or garage sale or thrift store. By spring I hope to be able to see my basement. At least the rest of the house is now in order. I figure if we don't use it we don't need it. I'll have to admit that Clean Sweep got me moving to really organize.

Yes clean sweep did that to me too. As I was taking everything out of rooms to paint them, I went through everything. I can't believe the stuff I got rid of and all the room I now have (except my sewing room).

DH comes from a long line of pack rats. When he was in the military I could toss stuff that we didn't need with each move. I just blamed the movers. Right now we have a garage full of junk that one day we might need to use. I'm talking about a garage 4 bay garage. That is a lot of stuff. I swear he has his first pair of combat boots that he was issued 36 years ago! I have a general rule, if it hasn't been used in 6 months out it goes. This applies to all except my sewing things.

My husband and I have been minimizing our stuff also. We had all of my mom's stuff with us when we moved the last time. I have been through it 5 times now and am happy with what I have done. Everything is organized except the mudroom in the basement. That is DH's hole and he can clean it up once every week or two. Not a lot of stuff in it but he needs to keep it organized.
We are painting and fixing up the house slowly and use ideas from TLC to help us out. We have also learned things from HGTV. One of our bedrooms is now an office but it can be quickly turned into a bedroom if someone chooses to do that. The same with the sewingroom. Both have laminate floors that are easy to clean.
On the whole, I can say my house is fairly clean. I only come home on weekends and DH doesn't do too bad keeping it clean during the week.

Kelly, I have to thank you for linking to that website. My doctor wanted to test my husband for schizophrenia, he's horrible about hoarding. We can't even share a room anymore, he's got so much stuff in there. I try to keep it down in the rest of the house, but it sure spreads like a disease. This was his house when we married, and he already had the basement and garage filled to capacity. It does NOT help that I'm the opposite....a true minimalist, except for sewing [lol]. But all of my sewing stuff is contained in my sewing room.

I HATE living like this. I'm going to browse that website until my eyes fall out, lol. Thank you!

I can't stand what I call messes. I have to be organized or I can't sew or cook. My dh is not like that. He's not a slob but plans to put things away " in a minute " so to speak. The garage that is his work shop drives me up the wall. He straightens it up maybe once a month but seldom where things belong. Just where a place for out of site. I can't find a thing when I need it so have my own tool box in my sewing room. I don't like searching for things. If I have to then I'm out of the mood to do what I planned to do. I clean out stuff fairly regular. Maybe that's why I don't have time to get to a lot of projects I want to do done. I'm also one of these people that can't sit still & do nothing. I feel like I'm wasteing time. I don't sleep long hours either as to me you only sleep because you have to. Any more is a waste of time. I've always been like this, just the way God made me. Drs. call it nervous energy but I call it not wasting time. Figure my body will be lieing prone long enough when I die. I'm a night person & a morning person... maybe that's it. Anyway I'm clean.

I enjoyed my home a lot. Is it clean? Depends on one's standards. I live with my 3 cats - soon to be 4. Yes, there's cat hair here and there but I Swiffer about 3X per week, clean up the litter box twice a day and make sure to wash the floors regularly.

I had a few people over for dinner about 3 weeks ago. One of them asked where I kept the litter box because he could absolutely not smell the cats. I was happy.
