Isn't it nice. He makes these lovely bowls, then he stains and polishes. An awful lot of time and effort but they are just super when done. I have a really nice one sitting on my coffee table right now. MaryW

That's beautiful Dave. My 16yo son wants to know how you do that. Well, I git out my whittlin knife and start going round the stick, till I gets what I'm looking for. Seriously, I bought a lathe about a year and a half ago. It's great fun, as well as relaxing and educational. It's a great hobby, especially for someone to start at his age. It can be a very expensive hobby though. If you live near a woodcraft, they do seminars, they will teach technique, safety and basic skills. If he is interested, he should look up the American association of woodturners, if there is a local chapter, he could probably sit in on a meeting and get a better feel for whats needed. (lots of old guys hanging out though) Do I sell them? Not really, I did sell some peppermills in the spring. (what was I going to do with 5 peppermills?) And I have enough wood to do 3 more similar bowls downstairs. Though I have started a platter that will have a different kind of rim. If I thought something like this would appeal to people around here I'd gladly donate a bowl for some sort of fundraising thing for the site. I'm lucky I survived moms cooking :p

LOL, just don't let him in your yard! When he moved last winter we stored huge pieces of tree trunk for him in our garage.

Hey Mary, You got a talented and smart son. His idea for a fundraiser is a neat idea. Maybe you could auction off one of his bowls. I am sure it would bring a pretty price. Gina

Please, don't tell him he is talented and smart. His head swells easily. He's an excellent son but such a torture at times. MaryW

That bowl is absolutely gorgeous! I love working with wood, but have never done any turning. Are you going to put any kind of finish or oil on it? Any more pictures of other projects? |

Hey Dave, That's beautiful & boy are they good sellers, as I'm sure you know. So expensive I can't afford one. Keep up the great work & make a fortune. One thought for you..... Give dear ole Mom half the profits. Come on now son, she carried you for 9 months, went through terrific pain getting you here, fed you, bathed you, cleaned up your upchuck & all those nasty diapers, & we won't even go into the terrible 2's or the teenage years. I could go on & on but don't you feel just a " little " guilty yet ? Just rassing you but nice thought, huh ? See Mom, I'm on your side. |

Dave, it is beautiful. My brother-in-law works with wood - teaches at university also. He had one piece, just looked like a polished log, put a cowboy hat on it and called it Jesse James. It sold for $10,000. I think he was involved in some wood art guild.....looks to me like you qualify! Allie "onward through the fog"

I would have thought ash was too brittle a wood to turn like that.. It is beautiful Dave.. I took a wood turning class a couple of years ago.. It was mostly introduction to woodturning, but it was one of the most interesting classes I have taken so far, since my retirement.. Some of the woods from South America were so fascinating..One little 2 X 4 rectangle of wood was so heavy.. It was a dark color , either burgundy or black, I cannot remember now.. Our instructor had some beautiful bowls.. He had a Lampshade that I loved.. He had turned it down to very thin, and the light that came through was beautiful..
