I just finished the child's kimono by Folkwear (http://www.folkwear.com/136.html) and may I say they never give you the good tips for the hardest part of the pattern - it was a real pain in the arse to get the neckband attached to the very tight curve of the back neckline. "Sew together, easing in fullness". Nothing EASY about that, thank you! ALSO the pattern gives a one-size template for traditional large (2 + inches) seam allowances (to "let out" the kimono as the child grows), and then gives you tips to professionally finish the raw edges of the seam (how you're supposed to do that with 2" of excess fabric, I'd like to know)! I ended up cutting off the excess for French seams, which means I could have saved yardage and now have a bunch of useless strips.

I have only sewn with Folkwear's children's patterns - are their adult patterns any better? I would guess my skill level is at Advanced Beginner. I am wondering if I should try an adult pattern, since I love what they have to offer. What have you ladies thought of Folkwear's stuff - sizing, directions, etc?

I made a very full gown from Folkwear a few years back. It was quite involved but turned out very nice. I think it was called a Day Gown but I used it for a nightie. It was very full with pleats and gathered sleeves plus lined bodice.

I have not made anything by them, but am glad to get an opinion, because I was thinking of ordering some patterns from them sometime.

When I have a hard time with something like a collar or a princess seam, I pin first, then I hand baste (a pain, but worth it). Then when I sew, I put the part with the most fabric on the bottom, and the feed dogs help ease it in. I made my daughter's lined dress with 4 princess seams and not a pucker in sight!

I was just looking at the reviews on Pattern Review, and most of them say they're a good pattern and then go on to say that it is very hard and that usually the instructions are REALLY BAD. But, they all liked the patterns.
So, that was kind of interesting.
