I just finished the child's kimono by Folkwear (http://www.folkwear.com/136.html) for my 2 1/2 year old's Halloween costume. I decided to finish the raw edges of the inner seams with french seams (http://www.sewneau.com/how.to/french.seam.html) and I figured it all out by myself! I was scared I would screw up my seam allowance but it turned out perfectly - looks better than a lot of RTW!

Just had to share with a few ladies who might actually think it's cool - my husband doesn't quite "get it", why I feel so great about a sewing success. :-)

That is very nice Blackie, you should be very proud. Quite the accomplishment I would say.

I think French seams made me realize I'd taken a step higer in my personal ranking of my skills. That and cutting out garments with a rotary cutter.

Now a rotary cutter still has me scared, primarily because I can't control it that well, and would end up ruining half of my cloth. That one I'll have to practice with a lot more before I'm willing to do that.

I like it because I get a good cut without lifting the fabric and pulling it out of shape at all. With scissors I could never get it as good. At first I used scissors at tight curves and notches but now I just slice away.

Electric scissors are good too, but nobody uses them anymore.

I saw someone a couple of weeks ago slicing up a quilt top with electric scissors, slick as can be.

Once I feel a little more secure in my ability to actually cut as I planned, I might try the rotary cutter. I'm still not always that good at cutting straight if I don't have something holding it in place.

Congratulations!!! Now, your next book purchase should be Fine Machine Sewing by Carol Ahles. It does take your sewing skills to that next level.
Happy Stitching!
