Is there a way to test a fabric that will fade in first washing? I don't know when in the cycle this is happening, but I'll get "stripes", like where it twisted. It happens when I wash just a couple yards by itself even. My front loader spins out very well and will do this to new jeans too (even pre-washed ones). Seems that I only get the fade marks on deep blues and reds. Should I wash the first time with vinegar only (pre-wash cycle?) and maybe avoid the spin cycle??? Anyone had experience with this? Thanks! Tencel skirt is coming together great!!! |

Does your front loader have a gentle setting? With mine I use gentle wash and I can also select my final spin speed on anything that I am not sure how will react to being washed.

Hi Gina, I use a delicate cycle and cold water on all of my handmade clothes, but I don't have a spin selection. That would be nice, though. |

I'd use the white vinegar too. We use it on all cross stitch thread too before we start a project to set the colors.

I think I'll experiment with my next suspicious blue or red fabric and divide it in half, using vinegar in the wash cycle on one and not on another. Thanks! |

I have never washed my threads when I do any kind of embroidery or needlework.

I should have clarified that, I only wash the hand embroidery floss in vinegar...it tends to bleed if it is washed later.

I've been doing embroidery for 64 years and I have never had any floss to fade or bleed and I have never pre-treated any...What kind of water do you have ?? Maybe it the chemicals in your water treatment..

I've been using white vinegar in all my pre-washing for so long I can't remember where I learned it. It really does seem to 'set' the colors. I just grab the gallon jug and pour a couple of healthy 'glugs' as the washer fills; not too scientific and probably overkill. Anybody have an actual vinegar/water formula? |

Pam and Libby -- Many cross stitchers set the colors of their floss with vinegar, especially those who use a lot of DMC. The very dark colors, the reds, dark blues and blacks will, sometimes, bleed. For years I have used Anchor and that solves the problem. It does not bleed. Of course some of the newer, fancy overdye flosses can't be washed at all. Dorothy |
