Hi all! I'm making valances for my DDs room, and the fabric I've chosen for the backing/accent is not a home dec fabric. Is there a trick to using regular fabric for a pattern that calls for home dec material? Because it's on the back of the valance, seams aren't too much of a problem. Thanks so much! Jen Jennifer

Hi Blue Kangaroo and welcome to Sew whats New. There are no real tricks. Usually home dec. is wider fabric because the projects are bigger. Big windows or upholstery projects. Sometimes it looks nicer because it is heavier, more appropriate. But I have made many, many window toppers out of quilting cottons and lt. wt. fabrics. MaryW

I've always been taught that the difference between home dec fabrics and regular is the pattern repeat.. It is usually 18 or 21 inches in home dec fabric..This is necessary information when you need to match the pattern in putting pieces together.. I don't see that that is necessary in backing and trim work. (that is what you said, wasn't it ??)

Quite often I have used Wal Mart's $1.87 fabric for home dec. lining...I hate to waste that kind of money (for home dec fabric) and I can get just about any color I need.
