As many of you must have heard by now, they are recalling all Vioxx medication. Many people are hard pressed to find a substitute for this. My neighbor has just about seized up from not taking her Vioxx every day. She is in a great deal of pain and is so tired she doesn't feel like doing anything.

Any of you found a substitute?

I was on Celebrex for a while, but it just didn't do the job that Vioxx had done. I had to stop taking it because I have had heart problems in the pass.
Bextra is antoher on, but I have heard alot of problems with that one also.

I took both Celebrex and Vioxx. Had problems with both because I have a form of Lupus. Now I take Bextra, which I have had good luck with.

I tried Bextra and my blood pressure dropped to the point where I thought I was going to pass out. I took Relafen for several years and was very satisfied with it. 1500mg once a day. Never had any stomach upset or any other side effects. Unfortunately all good things come to an end. I stopped getting relief with it. I'm now trying Naprosyn 1000mg, but I have to take Prevacid with it because it use to make me sick to my stomach. So far so good as far as the stomach problems, but the pain isn't controlled as well as the Relafen did. I did start on Glucosamine and Chondrotin to see if that would help some too. It's only been about a month and I've been told it takes about 3 months to build up and give any relief.

Welcome Nita to Sew Whats New.
These drugs are so scarey sometimes. I don't have to take this stuff but I know what it's like when someone has to have a substitute and there is nothing available. You are totally lost and all at sea.

an auto immune disease. The immune system does not work as it should..it is overactive...it tries to destroy everything in sight..good or bad...I was diagnosed in 1980 when they didn't know a lot about it..over the years they have learned so much more..although it is a very hard thing to diagnose..tell your sister to go to her Dr. & if they think there is any basis for it they will send her to a rheumologist...
As for me my lungs are involved along with the joints..most of the time I do well as long as I stay out of the sun..wear sunscreeen, long sleeves, hats & etc..also when I over do the fatigue is something else..might as well not get up cause you'll be back in bed before your feet hit the floor..
I have found that I do well if I don't start feeling sorry for myself..I try to stay positive..the key word is try..
I really like this forum, I haven't been to all the different ones but I will in time.
I taught myself to quilt about 3 yrs. ago..I do ok..nothing fancy & all by machine as the arthritis in my hands make it hard to do hand work.. there I go complaining again....
I hope this helps your sister. & tell her to hang in there..

I agree with Nina. I have decoid lupus, which is of the skin. I get bad sores all over my skin, there are days I feel like I need to stay in bed, but I have also learned not to feel sorry for myself. I had to learn to stay out of the sun, to wear sunscreen and put up with the joint pain. My husband and I decided to join a fitness center with a swimming pool. We go a couple of times a week. The swimming seems to be helping. Exercise is one thing my Doctors tell me to do. And only do as much as I can handle. And when I am having a bad day, not to push myself. I have learned, on bad days, I sit and read. I don't push myself with anything that is too demanding on those days.

I started Bextra a week ago and so far so good. The celebrex wasn’t doing much at all. I have rheumatoid which is similar to lupus and also attacks the immune system. My rheumatologist also prescribed Arava which unfortunately causes hair loss. Arava slows the immune system down but you have to be careful as you pick up everything going around.

I had to write, if I understand this forum right many are suffering arthritis of some sort, besides lupis.
There was a lady who lived in our area for yrs. Her arthritis got so bad her hands were terrible knarled. She moved away to a town that is a 2 hr drive. I saw her again after a few yrs and instantly saw how beautiful her hands were. Straight and not puffy or anything and I had to ask her what she did. She swears by a diet. So I did some checking and found this site.
http://beautysquare.com/index.php?page=shop/arthritisdiet&source=over
There are other sites for diets and info. Maybe this will help some of you. If it does I am so glad I passed this on.
I also know that my mother complained from arthritis and when we helped her with a diet, cutting down on coffee, was the main one, we don't hear complaints anymore.

If you want to research more yourself, just type arthritis diets.

I have lupus too....I took Vioxx and it didn't work for me and made my asthma act up....I NOW take Bextra and I love it...of course I don't take it every day, just when I think I need it....the key to dealing with lupus is NO stress, stay out of the sun, do what you can do that day and let the rest go.
I live like a vampire...all the neighbors know. (so they don't gossip and act weird if they don't see me for days on end)(my husband is gone a lot for business so one of my neighbors checks on me, just to make sure I'm Ok.)
I've been lucky so far (with the lupus stuff) I don't take meds much, I can do what I want, most of the time and life is good ! (I have shades on all my windows...I wear long sleeves and pants year 'round. I have a special registration for my car that allows me to have REALLY dark tint on my car windows and any other car I may have to drive)

I take 4 medicines for the lupus. Bextra is one I take everyday. I also take Plaquenil twice a day ( the doctor is starting to reduce this one), Skelaxin once a day, and Elavil at night to help me sleep. Since I'm not working the stress has been better, but I have to go back to work sometime. But like you stay out of the sun, and do what you can on good days.

taking it easy & resting before you wear yourself out..I also take Plaquenil,
Methotrexate, I take Wellbutrin to help me stay calmer..I also take Vicodin for pain..Ultram when pain is mild..
I do have a lot of stress as I'm taking care of my husband..he fell in July of 2002 & ruptured his colon...it took a year & a half & 10 surgeries to get it back together where it would stay..he had to wear an ostomy bag for a while & although I took care of it he hated it..now it seems dementia is setting in also..he also has a constant infection that comes thru on some of the scars on his belly..right now he has two openings..we went to Redding last week & they put the Picc line back in so we can get stronger antibiotics in him.. his veins are so bad now they can hardly get an IV in..his Dr. here in town called this morning & wants me to bring him to the hospital in the morning so they can see his reaction to the antibiotics they want to use..
So anyway I am going on & on...we have been married 43 yrs. & I cannot put him in a nursing home..I will keep him home as long as I can..our oldest daughter lives here so she helps as much as she can..
I am NOT looking for sympathy so please don't feel I am...
It is amazing how many of us do have Lupus in one form or another isn't it??
I feel fortunate it isn't any worse than it is ..I go into the Lupus forums & some people have it so bad it is hard to believe how they can keep going..
Well here I go again....really a blabbermouth today....
Have a good day everyone.......

I have "non-destructive" arthritis joint pain, and fibromyalgia, too.

Vioxx was my blessing.

The docs put me on Mobic when Vioxx was recalled. The 7.5 mg wasn't much help, but we've doubled it now & that's working better.

Hi....just a little note about a vioxx substitute....many talk about bextra, yes a very good drug, but according to my doc, it falls into the same catergory as vioxx.....and recent news says it can cause heart problems as well. My doc recently changed my bextra to....Meloxicam 7.5. Easier on your stomach and so far seems to be working well. I take mine for bad back problems. Good luck

I had been on Celebrex for some time due to arthritis in my lower back. I also have had 2 heart surgeries so when the news came out about Vioxx and I read that Celebrex and Bextra were in the same family, I got off the Celebrex. I take glucosamine and MSM and started taking 3 oz. of mangosteen juice and my pain is mild enough that I don't have to take any pain killers. (The mangosteen is a natural pain killer also, however.) I will not take any of the RX meds for arthritis as long as the natural things have it under control. My arthritis is osteo but my late hubby had severe rhuematioid. Nothing really worked for him until they put him on the shots that have to go in the stomach. Sorry, it has been 3 years and I don't remember the name. They had previously tried gold shots, and methotrexate and he was on daily doses of steroids also. His quality of life was very poor, even with all of this medication but like most of you, he complained very little and did what he COULD do.
What a great site this is. I have found so many things on it that are of interest to me. It really is the only one that I am continuously active on. Thanks, Mary for the good job of administering it.

I used to take Vioxx..for about 4 years and had NO problems with it so I was disappointed that it was being taken off the market. Initially, I was going to go on Bextra, like many of you, but then there was talk that they were going to discontinue that, too, due to heart problems. I started on Mobic and have had no problems with that. Recently, I've decided to stop the NSAIDs and just try Aleve to see how that works. I've done this for about 4 days now and haven't had any real aches and pains...so far. I read someplace that the NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) causes weight gain in some people so I'm going to see if it makes any difference. I'm always looking for ways to drop a few pounds!

My doctor very adamantly said "no Aleve". I don't like that stuff. He gave me a prescription for Naproxen 500 mg tablets to take twice a day. He also recommended Motrin. I asked him why no Aleve and he said because it contains ingredients other than Naproxen that he doesn't like that can have severe uncontrollable side effects on blood pressure, etc. So, DH and I threw out the Aleve. We've also thrown out Tyenol as DH has a friend whose wife came very, very close to dying about 8 months ago with liver failure due to taking Tyenol. My pharmacist says she wouldn't give Aleve or Tyneol to her worst enemies and she doesn't understand why they keep it on the market.

What the heck is going on with all these drugs lately? Aleve is the only thing that can kill a headache for me. :nervous:

Watch out that it doesn't kill more than just your headache. I was also on Vioxx and have been put on Naproxin for my arthritis, it helps very little. Don't know what we will try next. I truly hate it when the weather changes.

I was taken off Bextra just a couple of weeks ago. The doctor put me on Naproixn. It has helped on days when my pain isn't at its worse, but today it hasn't helped at all. I am only trying this for 3 months. If it doesn't work the doctor has some other things to try.

We can start our own pharmacolgy depatment with all this info. Military Mom, sad to say when I stopped taking the NSAID's no weight loss - I don't think I was on big enough a dose to make a difference. I think you only lose weight when you come off those if you have reacted to becoming puffy and full faced when on them.heigh ho!

I took Naprosyn for less than 3 months and with something to protect my stomach. The pain was controlled OK but it tore my stomach up. I lost weight since food in the stomach wasn't pleasant so I stopped eating. Couldn't keep that up since I know what happens to the gut with NSAIDs so I stopped. Am surviving on Tylenol and Motrin for now. Tylenol has been responsible for liver and kidney damage for years but has just recently been brought back into the spot light. Remember just because a medication is over the counter doesn't mean it is safe and you can dose yourself as to how you feel. If 2 are good 3 should be better-nope, there is a reason for putting dosing instructions on the bottles.
