Hi!
I have to sew a button on a leather coat. Can anyone tell me the technique to sew the button so that It's nice and tight with about 1/4 inch from the leather to the button.
If there is a website with pictures please let me know.
Thank you...

One easy way is to use a matchstitck between the button and the coat. After you have finished sewing the button on, go between the button and coat, wrap the thread shank, then go into the coat and tie off.

Yep, you can also use a rounded toothpick in between the button and the leather. Topstitching thread or buttonhole twist works best for this.

 Maybe I should use a pencil since the coat is so very thick

I have also seen people lay the matchsticks or toothpicks in an "x" across each other if they need more height for their button shank.

This is reminding me of the first thing we ever learned in Home Ec! Back when high schools were trying to convince us that sewing wasn't any fun... :-)

Right, Blackie, but the teacher made us use a pin instead of something easy like a round toothpick. I still use that method today, tho.. It always works.. I do use toothpicks.. I have found the ones that are as thick as round ones, but the middle part has flat sides.. They lay on the buttons easier.. That box stays in my sewing room, just in case I can't find them again..
