I'm making a long duster for my oldest stepson's Halloween costume. It's the style of coat worn by Morpheus in the first MATRIX movie. (Although the kid's going to be the Punisher, but that's beside the point!) (pattern envelope http://www.simplicity.com/design.cfm?designId=10559&design=5386 My problem is this: The pattern is sized perfect for him as far as chest-shoulders-waist measurements (he's a "tween", and the child's size of this pattern would not work), but the final length is going to be a good 6 inches too long. There are NO "adjust here" markings on the pattern pieces. Since this is an A-line...should I simply cut the pattern as-is, stopping six inches short of the actual pieces? OR...should I re-draft, attempting to incorporate the complete fullness of the original "bottom" of the pieces? |

Hi Heather, Cool costume! Well, if it's a true a-line, I'd go about 1/2 way down for each of the pieces for the bottom part of the costume and fold up so it's 6" shorter, then redraft the sides so that they work - mind you 6" is a lot - but you can probably still get the nice fullness at the bottom then. Londa agrees with Linda! Just draw a line straight across the pattern piece anywhere in the body- perpendicular to the grainline. Slash. Lap needed amount. Now straighten - or 'true' or 'average' out the jog created in the sides. Doing it this way instead of cutting it off the bottom will maintain the original fullness around the bottom.
