Im making a strapless evening dress out of some slinky, knitted, stretchy fabric. I going to ad boning to the lining to help with it staying up but would it be a good idea to add interfacing at any point to the actual material? |

I have never used slinky myself but have heard it needs lots of support. Let me see what I can find out for you.

There is a knit tricot type iron-in interfacing. It moves and stretches with the knit and if properly applied does not come loose. I would recommend this for your interfacing. It is not only my favorite interfacing for everything, it is the only thing I use in knits. The price is about 5 dollars a yard but it is much wider than most interfacing and as far as I know the only way you can purchase it if from a bolt. It comes in white and black.

Slinky works best with things that have no shape. Like a sundress. I have a book about different fabrics and it says to use elastic in all of your seams and neckholes armholes and such otherwise they will just continue to stretch.

I contacted Julie from www.timmelfabrics.com who sells slinky. She says not to interface slinky, it will prevent it from being slinky! I do know that seams need to be stabilized, otherwise your crotch could be down around your knees. MaryW

Mary kindly emailed me to get in on the discussion.... For the evening gown you are describing, I would imagine you might have to make the slinky outer layer smaller, but other than that, I wouldn't add fusible interfacing to it. The lining and boning in that - all setting at a grosgrain waist stay should really be the inside fit. Ask me how I know - after having created a strapless wedding dress for DD! It is possible to fuse to Slinky KNit with the Fusible Tricot - which is, indeed, one of the few interfacings that come 60" wide. That might be necessary for detail areas of a Slinky Knit garment. I have posted my document of Slinky KNit hints at the very bottom end of the Newsletter page on my website that you might find helpful. Just click on Newsletters - one of the top tabs, then scroll all the way to the bottom of the document and you'll find my Slinky Knit Sewing and pattern ideas document. I love Slinky. Just made Loes Hinse's Criss Cross Top from it - here is a link: http://www.londas-sewing.com/images/ccfullonclone.jpg I hope this is helpful. Londa www.londas-sewing.com Londa
