Hi Jill and welcome to Sew whats New.

Do you have a 6" - 8" tail of bobbin thread pulled out. You need about that much to begin.

Is the bobbin in the right way? Mine needs to be placed with the thread coming off counter-clockwise.

"Hi" My bobbins go inside a bobbin case. Then on the outside there is a small lever you to hold out to get it to go in as far in the machine as possible. If you don't drop your bobbin in this way it just don't stay in. This is hard for me to discribe in words. Also there is a small track on the bobbin case to the thread through.Hold the little lever, but it in then let the lever go. Then you can drop your needle to pick up that bobbin thread and bring it to the top. If this still don't help, look in your area for your local sewing/quilting store. Most will have beginner lessons. .

Does your machine have a top drop-in bobbin, or a bobbin in a bobbin case that rides vertically below?

For drop-in bobbins: they almost all should turn coutner clockwise when you pull the thread. There is a doohicky down there too that you must get the thread into - the bobbin tension in that case the bobbin sits in. Do you have a manual - if not, write to me, I could help you. Once then you hold the top thread and turn the handwheel towards you til the needle goes down and pulls up the bobbin thread through the throat plate hole as a loop - then pull that loop and you should be set to go. Once that is done, you MUST see the bobbin thread going across the top of the bobbin in the bottom, or it is not in the tension.

For an auxillary bobbin case as the gal just before this posted - looking at the bobbin in the case, it should unwind clockwise.

Hoping this is helpful.

Hi
I have a White, and the little lever on the bobbin case MUST be held open while you insert the bobbin into the machine. You must get it all the way in, BEFORE you release the lever. The lever LOCKS the bobbin in place, but only if the case is put in correctly. Otherwise, the whole thing will fall out.

Also, the thread has to go through the slot, and then the spring. If you are missing the spring, it won't work.

YOu have to make sure you are loading the bobbin with the thread going in the right direction, so check the book to make sure about this.

Try all that and if it still doesn't work, try a new needle, if its even slightly bent, it may not work. Make sure you have a thread tail about 6 inches long, and that its hanging free before you hand turn the wheel to advance the stitch. Then pull up the bobbin thread, when you see it at the stitch plate.

If you do all this correctly, and it still doesn't work, your timing may be off.

hope this helps
