Hi Dorothy, Although I try and "make" my own doll hair, these are some supplier you may want to try. I believe you can get their catalogs for free. CR's Crafts Kemper Doll Supplies For general dollmaking supplies and advice, I like the following sites: www.sistersanddaughters.com www.thedollnet.com www.dollmakersjourney.com Nancy |

I bought a china head and hands to play around with. I trust what you do would be make body and arms and glue on? The head is very nice with an elegant updo. MaryW

Hi Mary, Yes, if the head has shoulders you can make a cloth body and secure it under the shoulders through the shoulder holes. If the head doesn't have shoulders, you could make a wire armature covered in batting, then muslin or the actual clothing, and secure it to the head. The hands would be secured to the arms by gathering the end of the arm and securing it to the hand. Venus Dodge and Sue Atkinson have some inspiring books about dolls, clothing and miniatures. I'm not into making the miniatures myself, but I have great respect for anyone who puts the detail into the miniatures that these women do! Nancy |

Nancy, thanks so much. The shoulders don't have holes so I will have to make a body shape and do some gluing. You sound very knowledgeable. What type of doll do you make? MaryW

Mary, I make cloth dolls, but I love to read about them also. There aren't many cloth doll books out there so when I see one I usually have to buy it, LOL. Nancy |

How big are your dolls Nancy? Which part do you enjoy the most about construction. From what I can gather, doll makers all have vivid imaginations when it comes to their creations.

Mary, They are usually 18" - 24". I usually use a book pattern and vary the clothing and the hair. I hate to stuff them and the part I like most would have to be deciding what they want to wear. Sometimes they'll just sit there in their birthday suits for weeks until I pick the right fabric for their clothes. I usually have to make their faces, then their clothes, and hair and accessories last. They never end up being what they start out as, and I suppose they decide that along the way. I like making dolls that look like "young ladies" so far, and jointed dolls are fun. As I improve I'll probably attempt to make a few "grandma's" because they appeal to me also. I'd also like to attempt a Santa and Mrs. Claus, maybe a couple of elves.... What about you Mary, what kinds do you create? Nancy |
