Beginning to search for a machine (embroidery?) that, rather than stitching pictures or designs, would allow me to put text, rhymes, messages onto fabric for framing or whatever. As a writer, I would be the author of the text. All I see in ads are machines that embroider flowers, etc. with little or no mention of using the aphabet (also being able to use different fonts.)

Anyone have any suggestions of where to start looking?

Thanks for any help! Mary B

Hi Mary B,

Welcome to the SWN discussion boards!

I think there are optional cards that you can get with different lettering fonts for most embroidery machines. If you visit the websites of the various manufacturers, they may have more detailed info and pictures on the options that are available.
Take care,
Donna

I think that most machines that embroider also do fonts...Janome has them built in as does Bernina......for 'exotic' fonts www.embroideryarts.com
There are lots of sites that sell fonts... www.oregonpatchworks.com
www.embroidery.com etc.

Mary B - Are you looking for a sewing machine with fonts, or an embroidery machine with fonts? If you are just wanting a sewing machine that will do lettering well there are all makes and models that come with an alphabet. They come in all price ranges too. Janome, Brother, Bernina, Viking, Pfaff, Singer,Kenmore, and Baby Lock all make sewing machines with block and script stitches. Then there are the sewing/embroidery combo machines. Of course all embroidery machines will give you the most possibilities when it comes to fonts. The sewing machines with built in alphabets usually are limited to 7mm wide stitches. Check out the Brothers, Janomes, and Kenmores if this sounds like what you want. Kenmore has just come out with a new model the 19606 with a sale price of $599. Brothers also have a good price point and hard to beat fonts.

The Bernina 200E has up to 9mm stitch width. There are built in fonts which can be stitched in many different sizes (you just change the size by mm in the sewing machine itself). They can also be arched up and down, and put in a straight line up and down without any additional software or they can be stretched and "squashed" on the sewing machine screen. You may import into the machine with Artista based cards or CDs and of course you may download from a PC (as with many other types of machines.) The machine also has a color touch screen and thread numbers and colors that allow you to view your item as it will appear when it is stitched out. If you happen to add the Artista software (for a computer), there are a number of fonts that come with the V4 with a full range of sizes that you can create, shape and import into your machine.

I have a Janome (Kenmore) 19365 computerized machine that does several alphabets in block and script but the lettering is rather small. I use this machine side by side with my Brother made White 3300 E for all the larger lettering and fonts. The 3300 comes with built in alphabets and also there is an embroidery card that comes with it that offers many fonts. You can change the sizes also. I am embroidering names in French and Italian in different colors and fonts on plastic covered canvas for my daughters out door pool furniture. This little machine does a professional looking job. It has done some nice monograms on towels also. I did some swim towels for my grandkids with their names on them and did deco stitches around them.

Oh my goodness, so much information in two short days. Why didn't I find this site earlier??

You all have given me so much to think about and research. I do appreciate it!

I've sewn all my life (and that's a long, long time) but this reinforces the fact that there is always something new to learn. I didn't know that sewing machines can do letters. I have a Janome 3000 at home that I love, and an old, old Singer that I bought back in about 1978 used, that I keep up north for sewing when we are there.

My Janome is great, but doesn't do lettering that I know of. After I recuperate from a recent emergency appendectomy, I am hitting the road to the Janome dealer again. Love it !

In the meantime I'll be checking into all the hints you all gave me using the internet and perhaps the phone.

Again, that you very much.

That last line of my previous post - slipped through my proofreading.

It should read: Again, thank you very much!

Hi Mary, where in MI are you? I'm in Southfield. I have two Designer 1's from Husqvarna Viking, and all the software - with the software, you can take any true type font and make it into stitches, and create whatever lettering, whatever size, you want. Feel free to either email me or private message.
