Hello.

I am looking for a book that is basically a teaching guide for me to learn the basics of sewing. I have The COMPLETE BOOK OF SEWING NEW EDITION and its got some great info, but I need a little more information than what is given for the examples in this book. I've owned a machine for well over 5 years but I couldn't tell you what it's called when I'm doing whatever it is I'm doing.

Thanks!

Two of my favorite books are Sewing 101 which is recommended for beginners by the Home Sewing Association and Nancy Zieman's Essential Guide to Sewing. Both have a wealth of information and are easy to understand. Nancy's book has detailed photos of what the stitches should look like when done correctly. To take your skills to the next level is Fine Machine Sewing by Carol Ahles. Happy Stitching!

My recommendation is "Sewing 101" published by Creative Publishing International. I got it for Christmas last year and read and re-read and highlighted it before I even started using my machine. Handy feature - spiral bound hardcover, so it stays open for easy reference while you're sewing!

Another helpful book is SewBasic by the Editors of Threads magazine. It's arranged as 34 articles, all with a different theme or skill. Between those two books and Fabric Savvy by Sandra Betzina (the lowdown on 85 different fabrics), I feel like I got off to a pretty good start. Plus everyone here at SWN is really great about answering questions, so help is never far away
