Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and relatively new to sewing. I couldn't find any information on this topic in the forums, but I might have missed it. Is there any information out there or can anyone give me any hints on how to dismantle a dress and use the fabric? My sister wants pillows made out of her bridesmaid dress fabric. I don't want to start taking the thing apart before I have some kind of clue as to how!! Also, how do you determine selvage versus edge? Any advice or pointers to information sources would be great!! Thanks!

Patience is not one of my great virtures. When I have done something like this I usually have started out taking out the seams, but after a little while, I get frusterated and I usually end up cutting down the seamline with my Gingers (great invention). Unless you just don't think that you have enough fabric for what she wants, you probably won't use the old seams anyway. About the grain. In most fabrics you can see the grain. If you can, you could just lightly mark it with a ruller and chalk on the wrong side. You can also pull a string up and down or across to get a grain line. It is not as easy to tell which side was the selvage. Unless the dress is unusually full, chances are that the selvage ran up and down the skirt (and I would assume the bodice too.)
