I am making a dress for my daughter and am using satin. The hem was fine until i finished sewing.I noticed that after a few minutes the hem started twisting and folding on itself. What can i do to sew a neat looking hem?Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

If I'm not mistaken, hems fold on themselves when there is not enough weight in it? or is it that there is too much? Let me find out first. I'm old and forget.

They will twist if the fabric is moved to the side one way or another too, particularly with a rounded hem. When you turn your hem make sure that you turn the hem straight up and don't pull if to one side. I just made something that had a very large round skirt and used horsehair to hem it. (I sewed the horsehair on the outside 1/4 inch from the edge. When I turned the hem inside, it rolled the fabric hem automatically). I then hand stitched the edge of the horsehair down. The way the horsehair was made made it easy to take out the huge amount of fullness. It was easy and made a very nice edge that was stiff enough to hold its shape. Depending on the type of line in your skirt, this might work well for you. I'm not happy with a hem on an evening dress I made my daughter and I'm thinking of taking the hem out and doing this on that dress too. I had not made a horsehair hem in years!

Thanks for the horse hair hem idea, can't wait to try it out i feel it will work with this skirt. The skirt of the dress is floor length and i am not sure about the term "line"...am a beginner and just thought to try this dress out for my daughter.

By line I mean style, a-line, straight, circular, etc. The fuller bottom in relationship to the waist, the better I think this will work. Just don't stretch the horsehair as you sew it to the skirt.
