Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the boards - and relatively new to sewing as well.

I am attempting a clutch bag (Butterick 3420). All was going terrific till it came time to sew the "sides" (the "V" shape sides that fold in).
I am completely oblivious to how to do this. I understand the concept of how to put them on - I just don't get how to sew them on. It seems almost impossible - how in the heck can you possibly get the needle in there?

I know this may seem difficult to explain without visuals - but any kind of feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to help - and I look forward to participating on the boards.

I think that you will have to do it with the bag wrong side out but will it turn if you do that or is the bag too stiff?

Hi Pam,

According to the pattern - the sides are to be sewn last (after cardboard/chipboard) has been inserted.

I think I may have found a way to manipulate the pattern (toss it aside completely) - and come up with my own solution for the sides. I'll keep you posted. ;-)

In the meanwhile - I would definitely like to hear other options too.

Thanks again Pam!

I've never made a clutch bag so cannot comment on the "V" but I do have one other suggestion. Someone in the quilt guild I belong to made a purse and tote bag and she put plastic canvas inside instead of cardboard. That way if it ever gets wet, it won't ruin the bag. Just food for thought. Good luck with the other bit.

Thanks Violet! Yes, I will use plastic canvas in the future, for the very reason you brought up. I used cardboard this time around - because it was right there. :-)

The mock trial, so to speak, for my manipulation idea worked fairly well. I am going to attempt it again in a few hours. I will be sure to explain how in case someone else is having trouble too.
