Hello, I'm currently looking into buying my first sewing machine. I'm looking to do mainly repairs (patches on jeans etc.) and some home decorations, such as making curtains. I have almost no experience yet ... other than seeing my mother sew for many years. Is there anyone who can advise me on a few types/brands of sewing machines in a middle price range class ? It would be great if the brand would be for sale in Canada though. Many thanks in advance ! In the meantime, I will keep reading the interesting stuff on this website and buy some sewing magazines ... |

QUOTE] Hi Ram, I am not familiar as to what brands are available in Canada - but I would advise purchasing a machine that is somewhere in the "middle" - one that isn't so simplistic that you become bored, yet not one that has so many bells & whistles that you feel overwhelmed. Hello Ram, Welcome to this site, you'll love it. I too taught myself to sew. Mom was a beautiful seamtress plus made beautiful quilts, all hand made. She never taught me to sew as afraid I'd mess up her machine. Probably would have too. My first machine was a straight stitch 1947 singer. Still have it. Got me a good book & made a lot of my kids clothes. I kept moving up on machines that do more & you will also. Get a machine that does what you want to learn to do but not one that scares you to death that has so much to learn at first. Myself I like the Janome brand & they are so well made & good support. They have all price ranges too. Try out different brands & see what's out there. My advise is to get one where you have some support & not one like from Walmart or Sears that has no support. A good used one is fine if you have someone that is willing to help you when needed. Be sure it has all the booklets with it though. Good luck. you'll do fine. |
