I am highly photosensitive due to a disease called systemic Lupus. It requires me to wear wide-brimmed hats which are not available year round. - Well, not unless you buy a plethora of summer hats and try not to notice the "LOOKS" you get in the winter months her in cold upstate NY. So, I have tried developing my own hat but misjudged mainly because I've lost the math skills since the mini-strokes hit earlier this year. [This can develop for some of us as part of the disease. - ugh! Oh, well!] Anyway, I was trying to use a 6.5 inch opening at the bottom and a top of only 5.0 inches. The hat turned out beautiful but not my size. When I took it apart and again tried on the brim, it fit perfectly. I need help to figure the angle of the upright part of the hat to the 5.0 inch diameter circle on top. Before all this trouble this year I could have done it myself., but now I am befuddled as to how to figure these math calculations. Can I get some help, please? Thank you so much b
God bless you, b

Here are a just a few of the hat patterns that are readily available to you. I'm sure that your hats are quite nice, but these may provide the mathmatical formulas for you (and a few ideas too). Most all the big pattern companies have great hat patterns. Thanks to the Red Hat Society, there are more sophisiticated hats appearing in the catalogs and stores everywhere.

On a personal note, I'm sorry about your disease. Many years ago (before good Lupus testing) we went through a terrible time with my husband. It was thought that he had Lupus. He was so ill for several months that we worried if he would live. Instead, it was a related illness. It can really wreck your lifestyle. The research, diagnosis and treatment of this disease has come a long way in the last 25 years.

Went to JoAnn's today. for their 99cent butterick / McCall's sale on patterns and picked up two of the ones you mentioned plus two others... have Butterick 4204 and 3787 in hand along with mcCall's 3625 and 4477. Now will have to simply adjust my hat to fit their patterns.
Shouldn't be too bad since I have to adjust patterns for my adult 4' 8" daughter - (shoulder to bust line, sleeve holes, neck lines, bust to waist.... you get the picture.) Just another puzzle to figure out. And the good Lord has made me pretty good with them - not great- just good enough! Here goes another. If it's because of the Red Hat Society that these patterns are available, then I thank God. They were not available last year, I know. Whew! hanks for your help. b :coffee2:

I think that it is wonderful! We have had play hats for years but some of these are just beautiful! The really cool thing is that you'll not only have good patterns but you'll be in style too! It is nice when our disabilities become assets! Enjoy your patterns!
