Which patterns do you use the most when sewing garments? For the past year or so I have made clothes from La Fred, Loes Hinse and some of Sandra Betzina's patterns.

Since I work in a fabric store, I tend to purchase from the main pattern companies, Vogue, McCalls, Simplicity and Butterick. We also carry Kwik Sew. I prefer Vouge and McCalls for style and Kwik Sew for easy of construction.

I often choose a basic pattern and go crazy creating my own details to make it mine.

Which companies do you feel offer the best fit? I have to adjust every pattern I make, so often make the adjustments once and then remake the same garment several different ways.

I usually end up with the big four, just because they are easier to get my hands on. I do like Sandra Betzina's patterns. I tend to use a pattern many times, just changing it a bit here and there. I don't copy them though like so many of you do. Lately I go when they are on sale for a buck and get every one I like. I have a drawer full of unused ones.
I'm hoping I'll have to cut them smaller and smaller sizes.

Mary,
I don't know abt Dorothy , but I get mine for that when Hancocks has them on sale.. I have a bunch of numbers of the patterns I like (almost all of Sandra's, I like) and when they have a $1.99 pattern sale (limit 5, please) I just whip out my list and find the 5 they have in stock.. I have acquired quite a supply of Sandra's patterns this way.. I don't pay full retail for patterns nowadays, they are much too expensive.. The other day , I bought a cute apron pattern , and its price on package was $ 10.95, can you imagine??
I paid $1.99..

Mary --
I probably lied.
Sandra B.'s are Vogue aren't they? They never go to a buck. But I still like um. The other brands are a buck each .. on sale... now & then.

But Hancock has Vogue on sale for 75% off about every other month. If you are not the mailer, be sure to sign up so you can get a heads up on pattern sales.

Our Hancock is brand new. They don't have Vogue patterns in the store. You have to order them. I thought that was odd but maybe they will eventually get them in stock.

Actually, not all Hancock's carry Vogue. Sorry about that. I live in the Atlanta area and have worked for Hancock off and on for about seven years. The store closest to my home doesn't carry Vogue, but the store I work at does.

Does anyone know if Jo Ann's runs big sales on Vogue?

Sometimes JoAnns do. I just got a new flyer and see where they are going on sale.

When I lived in Ohio Joann's regularily had vogue on for a buck, time to stock up!!
Now I have a bunch of Peggy Sayers patterns, Sandra B and Loes Hinse on the brain, plus my burda magazines which are very cool even though the instructions are a bit vague.

thinking about checking out Jalie as well, people say they are well made and easy to put together, I've given up on the other 3 of the big 4 b/c my shoulders are just too slim and I have no bust and they just don't fit someone like me!

I work at Joanns and about once a month we have a sale for 75% off Vogue Patterns. Then we'll have Butterick & McCalls patterns for .99 and Simplicity patterns for .99. I've never seen the Vogue at less than anything but 75% off. These sales are usually only 3 days each too. To get advance notice of them, sign up for their preferred customer mailing list or have a friend who is let you know when the sale is. Many people complain because the sale is in between larger sales and they have to make a special trip just for the patterns :(
I like the McCalls Classic Fit patterns. Palmer/Pletsch does a great job of showing you how to adjust when your body doesn't fit the mold of a classic model lol :dave: . It takes some time to adjust the patterns but once they're adjusted, they're tailored to your body and can be reused many times.

I have always found that Butterick fit me the best but for my kids I usually gravitate towards McCall's.

Sandra's patterns are not only Vogue, but Butterick as well.. That is one thing I like about Vogue Co.. They make the best of their patterns in both labels.. I usually prefer the Butterick because they tend to be more classic.. I like classic patterns rather than 'high fashion' .. They tend to run more high fashion in the Vogue line than in the Butterick.. :bg: :bg:

I was told by our Jo-anns that the Vogue patterns are starting to slip in sales in the U.S. so the stores aren't selling them as much anymore. Our Hancock stopped selling them except when ordered. But when you think about it, unless you get them on sale they can run you up to $25 for a difficult pattern with extra pieces that could have just been attached in the first place? I made one a few months back and it had two extra pieces that had to be taped on for no reason? Luckily I was able to wait for it to be on sale so I got it of just a few bucks.

I really like Simplicity for costumes, they have the easier ones. Although, Butterick and McCalls have some pretty accurate ones. Vogue has some nice vintage recreations from the 40's. Kwik-sew is kind of a pain with the thick paper but they have kind of off the beaten path patterns like underwear/bras, swimsuits/unitards that I need and the others don't carry.

I would however like to find a plus-plus size company for my larger clients. I am making a costume for a client and she is bigger than all the patterns I could find. I can adjust but it would be easier if I could have just found a pattern that has plus size costume patterns.
