Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this problem. I purchased a Brother CS-8060 just so that I could hem our jeans and make small repairs. When I got the machine home, I immediately changed the needle to a Schmetz Universal needle (size 16) and threaded it with jean thread. Then, I began to stitch and the stitch was all wrong...as if the tension was wrong. I got straight stitch on top and a wavy, loose stretch on the bottom.

I played with it and played with it. I rethreaded it, took out and reinserted the bobbin, I checked the needle, I made sure the presser foot was up, and just kept trying different tension settings. Nothing worked

I thought it might be the factory settings, so today I exchanged that machine for a new machine BUT THE EXACT SAME machine. I thought maybe there was something wrong with the one i got before.

When I got it home, I did NOT change the needle. I only threaded it and used the needle it came with. I began to stitch and it stitched just fine.

My problem is:
What did I do wrong the first time??
Should I not have used the Schmetz universal needle?
If I change the needle again (for my jeans) is the same thing going to happen??

What do you think the problem was?? I'm so exasperated, i coud use a fresh mind!

*Thank you!*

When I have bought a new machine, the dealer has always taken the machine out of the box and spent several minutes adjusting and refining the settings on the machine. If you did not have someone to do this for you, it may have been out of adjustment from the factory. Not every machine sent is perfect. Some have issues that require a lot more tweeking, and sometimes repair before use. If the second machine worked well, the first one just may have needed more adjustment than you knew how to give it.

When changing the needle make sure to push the needle up as high in the slot as you can. Also take extra care to make sure it is correctly threaded through the tension disc. Sometimes you think it is in correctly but it isn't. Make sure you have the cotton running the correct way on the spool and that the bobbin is also in the correct way.

If all the above is ok, it might be worth taking it back to the shop and asking for a lesson to make sure you are doing everything right. That way they will see what is happening as this is your second machine it could be a fault with all the stock that came in at that time. This can happen.

Hope you are able to get the problem sorted and get on with your sewing soon.

Thank you all who replied. :bluesmile
The update is this: The new machine worked fine until I again changed the needle. So, something that I'M doing is obviously wrong.

I get a straight top stitch -------
but my bottom stitch looks like this ~~~~~

It's either the tension or the bobbin thread. I'm using Jean thread and a 14 needle this time. Needle is all the way up with flat side to back. I know thread is in tension disc because when I pull it with my fingers, I can feel resistance.

I'm wondering if it's my plastic bobbin with the thick jean thread on it.

I will keep trying to fix it.....if not, Brother gave me the name of a sewing shop that will take a look at it under warranty (so they said.)

Thanks for any other ideas!

Do you have a picture to show you how to put your bobbin into place.. My machine has a picture on top of the bobbin cover to show me how the thread should come off the bobbin when I load it into place.. If I put it in with the thread coming off the wrong way , it will stitch but not make a good stitch..Check to insure that your bobbin is loaded properly..

Thanks...yes, this Brother machine has really clear instructions...and i know I have the bobbin in right (mine goes counterclock)

I just called a place called the sewing center (an authouized Brother repair) and the super nice lady told me over the phone that I should NOT put the thick jean thread in the bobbin. I should ONLY put it in the top threader. Then she told me i should sew the jeans with the right side up.

It sounded weird to me as I thought you sew from the wrong side (when hemming jeans) but she said no.

So, I will try this..........what do all you think?

Did you write down her name and the time .. That is what I do , so if worse comes to worse and I have to lodge a complaint, I have evidence of why I did what I did...That has helped me quite a few times lately...

I have never had any luck with the heavier threads in my regular bobbin case either. I just thought it was me, that is why I didn't say anything. I know that some people buy special bobbin cases for heavier threads, but I didn't learn that until about a year ago.

My machines won't sew with the heavy jeans thread in the bobbin either. I have to do what the lady from the sewing machine shop advised if I want to use the jeans thread as an embellishment for jean hems. I've even tried loosening the bobbin tension on my Pfaff but no go there either.
