Hi, I'm new to this site. So I hope I'm posting the right way. Does anyone have directions for making a head band that covers the ears from the cold. I'd like to make it out of fleece (stretchy type like polar fleece)? TIA Linda

Hi Linda,

Here is a link to a free pattern.

I just made my youngest daughter a fleece hat and gloves this past weekend.
She loves them. Here is a picture.

Zhuie,
have you used that free pattern? I do not understand the 9th instruction.. Does it mean to overlap the ends 6 mm and sew together or does it mean to sew the 6mm centered and leaving just about 1/8 inch on each side. (to be turned and hemmed as in the 10th instruction) ?? i'm puzzled by that instruction.. :nc: :nc: :nc:

Sew the seam together in a normal way, and finger press open.

I have made the headband a bit longer and put velcro on so it is easier to put on without messing your hair. I have also sewn lycra binding over the edges so it has more of a stretch than turning the edges under allows.

But the 6mm is what I don't understand.. Do I overlap the ends by 6mm to make my seam.. If so, why did I have to put that extra fabric there to start with?? See, it makes no sense. Or not to me, anyway..

Thanks Magot & Mary for the compliments. You can have one Magot, just sew one up for yourself. Simple to do, measure your cirum. around your head, add seam allowance. Then decide how "high" (or hmmm) "tall" you want your hat, and how much of a roll up brim you would like. Then cut one piece, sew up the seam, finish the "brim" edge anyway you would like. I used my serger, to finish the "top" of the hat, and made yarn tassels and sewed them on. You can be really creative with these and they are easy to make. Post a pic when you finish yours....

Hi Libby,

The way I would do this, is just sew the seam like you would any other seam. The 6mm is the distance from your needle to the edge of the fabric. The 6 mm (I think) would be close to a 1/4 of an inch seam. Then just finger press open, roll up your hem and sew. Walla your done!

Liz (and everyone else)
Is my face RED??? Last night I was almost asleep and all of a sudden the answer popped into my head... I was reading 6mm , but my brain was thinking 6 cm....So, as soon as I finished my 2nd cup of coffee (thats when I start functioning as a human) I got on here to admit my bad case of the 'dumbs' about the measurements.. Metrics still throw me at times.. Sorry about the confusion.. Now everyone ROFLYAS... :bg: :bg: :bg:

Don't worry about it, I call these moments brain farts! :whacky: We all have them.

Glad you worked it out.
