I am trying to decide between Simplicity #4905 for my 2 youngest dds:
http://www.simplicity.com/index.cfm?crit=1065&id=1088&StartRow=1
and butterick 3316:
http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B3316=x&TI=10011&pageNum=8&M=&UK=34888923

And between Butterick 3321:
http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/butterick/shop.cgi?s.item.B3321=x&TI=10012&pageNum=6&M=&UK=34888923
and Mccalls 4246:
http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/mccallspatterns/shop.cgi?s.item.M4246=x&TI=40016&pageNum=5&M=&UK=34967940

Has anyone sewn any of the above patterns? Difficulty level?

TIA!
Love to hear what everyone is sewing, or contemplating sewing!

I did the McCall's 4246 for my DD. I did a royal blue matte satin for the skirt and the bodice, then a sheer royal blue with blue velvet hearts outlined in glitter for the bottom part of the sleeves and the overskirt. It was for a daddy/daughter valentine's dance. She was the belle of the ball! It wasn't hard at all. So I'm partial to that one for the second dress.

I also like the 4905 for the first dress. How old are your girls?

They are 5, (almost) 8, and 12 1/2.
I really love Mccalls 4246---I'm glad it isn't too difficult. I wasn't sure. It definitely is gorgeous. Jessica, did you use the fuller skirt or the slim skirt?
I think I am leaning towards the Simplicity 4905 for the younger ones, too.
I've never sewn with stretch velvet--so I wasn't sure how difficult it would be to use.

Thank you

I did the fuller skirt on that one. It stood out a little on its own because the satin was pretty heavy. I wanted more fabric for movement because of the glittery overlay. My DD likes attention!

Stretch velvet can be tough to work with, especially trying to make a narrow hem. It likes to roll. If you need to do a narrow hem, you might want to press a narrow strip of stitch witchery or something to the very edge first, then press it over twice before stitching.

I'm going to be doing the slimmer skirt for my DD for her concert. She has to wear white on the top and black on the bottom. I bought a beaded bridal train on Ebay for $13. I'm going to cut it up for the top, and use matte black satin for the skirt. For the little train godet in the back of the skirt I'm going to put a piece of the white top. I think it will come out nice. I'll be sure to post a picture.

Good luck with your projects and be sure to post any questions! (and pics, if you can!!!)

Those are all nice patterns - I'm sure the dresses will look great whichever you choose.

My fabric for DD's Christmas dress (and matching ties for DS and DH) is in the washer as I type. I'm making Simplicity 5830 for her out of a Christmas print calico.

Jessica,
Thank you for the helpful hint on sewing with stretch velvet.
Your daughter's Valentine's Dress sounds lovely--and it sounds like her concert dress will be exquisite
Linda,
That is a really cute pattern. Her dress will be adorable, I am sure. And what a wonderful idea to match ties for your ds and dh. Will you be wearing anything coordinating?

Happy Sewing, everyone!

Jen - thanks! This will be year #3 of doing the dress for DD and matching ties for DH and DS....I suggested that perhaps Dh had enough Christmas/Winter themed ties but he said he really liked the matching ones. When I was buying the fabric, he was bragging to the cashier about how his tie would match his little girl's dress - too cute. Maybe next year, I'll make something for me as well.....

The dresses sound cute, I made a stretch velour one for my daughter and put ecru coloured crochet lace around the neck and wrists. The stretch velour was a pain in the tush though, moves around like crazy, I serged a 4 thread edge on the lower skirt edge to keep it from rolling so I could hem it. She likes it b/c it is soft and warm and she can run in it (cut just to her knees she is 5)
I love the fact that she likes dresses. the rest of the kids are boys and they want to wear just jeans all the time, sigh...

I wish!!!! I really miss those days. All my 13 yr old wants is a demimn skirt. The other 3 are to hard to please @ 20,23, & 25. They don't wear a lot of dresses. I guess I will have to sew for myself or grandnieces. I used to make the Daisy kingdom dresses for DD but she won't wear dresses now unless they are denimn or T shirt style.

For my Christmas dress plan (for my 3-y.o), I fell in love with the fur-trimmed long-sleeved dress from the Winter 2004 Ottobre magazine. The original dress (http://www.ottobredesign.com/lehdet_js/2004_4/index.html?en) (on p. 13 of the catalog) is in this fabulous fabric that had a faux yak fur trim on the selvege. I found some beautiful pea-green nubbly wool blend for the dress (my daughter is gorgeous in green). Well now I have NO idea where or how to find some good fake fur - I really like the yak look (white would be nice). I don't mind paying a little $$ for something fabulous, not the normal plastic-y look of the fake furs at Joanne's, etc. Anyone know where to find something like that?

Blackie, Ottobre has some fabrics. Did you check the site?

Mary, thanks for the tip. I checked out their fabrics and it doesn't appear they have that particular fabric to buy. Also, all their fabric info was in Finnish or some other Scandanavian language which makes it difficult.

Has anyone here ordered fabric from Ottobre? What has been your experience?

(kind of OT - hope I'm not hijacking the thread!)

When you go to the site, you can choose the English language.

Try here for your faux fur.

Thank you for the link. They didn't have what I needed but it is a good resource!

I know you can choose English for the Ottobre site with the magazine, but seemingly not for the fabric site. At least, I still haven't found a way...

Blackie,

I've been looking for some trim for you. Here's a site with faux persian lamb trim. I don't know what color you want, this is gray.

http://www.dressitupbuttonsandtrim.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=SBAM&Product_Code=PL-RC&Category_Code=FFT

Here's a site with faux yak by the yard. It's expensive at $35.98, and you have to buy a half yard, but I'll bet if you cut it into 1" wide strips (using a razor blade from the back) you could get usable yak trim. It comes in chocolate brown or tan. They don't have a picture, but I'll bet if you e-mailed them they could send you one.

I hope you find what you want! Sophie would look adorable in that dress.
