I am making a quick simplicity pattern for a fleece long jacket with zippered front and side pockets. I hope to do a decent job and give it to my cousin who loves hand made gifts and is wonderfully talented in her own crafts!
Any ideas of how I might embellish this solid black fabric? I believe this is actually "boiled" fleece.

Solid black just begs to be embellished. Maybe with some motifs cut from fabric, or metallic threadplay. How about a border of fabrics along the lower hems. Applique, the possibilities are endless.

There are lots of new trims (if you don't have an embroidery machine) they have all those nice 'eyelash' ones....the chenille type...beads (loose and on sew-on tape)...theres iron-on bias (that you sew on with a decorative stitch)
There are all kinds of 'new' (they were new back in the 70's too) embroidered 'patches', flowers, etc...(I've seen them at Wally World and JoAnn's) There are wonderful buttons...they come in all shapes, sizes and materials....there are pre-embroidered sew on ribbons (Wally World and JoAnn's)...tassles (with matching braided ropes)..and on and on....

THis is the hard part of any of my "creations"! There are just so many options to limit myself to! I do have an embroidery machine and thought before I pieced the jacket together it'd be easier to embroider whatever I need to embroider first.
I like the idea of doing a pearl crown rayon edging with the serger around the collar, top of pockets and sleeves, then a beaded trim around the bottom and a small tassle zipper pull that will match the beaded trim. Do you think the same beaded trim around the wrist part of the sleeves would be overkill? Say just a one inch dangle?
Have you all ever been to http://www.calontirtrim.com ? Really interesting trims!

Criswell designs has a beautiful snowflake that would be lovely on an outerwear fleece jacket. You could scatter the snowflakes across the front and back, add the pearl crown rayon edging on the collar, and sleeve hems. The jacket would really pop in my opinion. Happy Stitching!
