You are so lucky!!! My sister makes "penny rugs" and sells them on Ebay and at craft shows. She "felts" the wool, then sews the rugs. Felting is big this winter, felted hats, gloves, scarfs, vests, jackets, pins. Just an FYI, the felting process is washing the wool in Hot water with automatic dishwasher (not fabric & not dish liquid) soap. Rinse in cold water. Then dry in dryer on hot setting. It will shrink, but it is now felted and ready to sew/craft. Have fun!!!

Our local Joanne's is having a dollar sale later this month on McCall's and Butterick patterns, so this is the time to buy. Look under accessories and crafts. I'm going because I haven't bought a pattern in years, and this gets the creative juices flowing again! Off the top of my head, here are some ideas: I would definitely wash and shrink the wool first to make craft items. Then make warm winter hats, scarves, mittens and the like. Cats just love wool----so I would make cat beds. Just buy baskets of a suitable size and cut a wool cushion to fit. If you just wash the wool and shrink moderately, not in the dishwasher, you could make vests and bags to match, maybe with a quick applique on a theme you think would be popular. There are sew many things you can do! |

What about pin cushions? I picked up a small booklet at my local quilt store - I think it was from Better Homes / Gardens "Wool Felt and Penny Rugs". I don't have it in front of me so I don't have the exact title. There are some cute ideas in there. Or maybe some little stuffed toys? It might take some practice with different types of shapes! One more idea ~ mug coasters - add some embroidery / beads? Lots of possibilities! |

oh you are lucky to have that wool stash! I am the one who makes Penny rugs. The penny rug is got it's name many years ago because they were made out of wool and any other material they could use. They were cut into circles the size of a penny, then sewn together. Now days there are many designs of penny rugs. Here are just some of them I have made and sold. Click on the link below my signature. I have also made rugs which are hooked with strips of wool. They are also in with the pictures of the penny rugs. I did see a book for a crazy quilt made out of wool! I think that would be a great one to do as well. ________________

What about rughooking? there is a huge hooking revival going on, most of the hookers are always on the search for wool scraps.

Laura, I owned a cross stitch and needlepoint shop. One day a little old lady, in her 70s at least and nearly 5-feet tall, walked in. She strode up to me, looked me straight in the eye and said "I'm a hooker." My jaw must have hit the floor. She was looking for burlap canvas. I will never forget her. Dorothy |
