What is a walking foot used for? I saw in another post where this was recommended for matching plaids. I am sewing a poncho which has an Indian geometric design. The pattern calls for a seam in back where I will want to match the pattern so that it is centered. Does this call for a walking foot?

Walking feet are generally used when you DON'T want the fabric to shift...ie matching plaids, velvets, satins, (things that slide on ya....) and quilting.
If you match the plaid and PIN it first, you won't need a walking foot (unless you want to use one...) DON'T sew over the pins, take them out as you go...

You may want to eventually invest in a walking foot depending on your type of sewing (quilts, polarfleece and other "napped" fabrics, matching patterns), but this time you could use "Seams Great" and wouldn't have to pin. Or you could pin and baste. I would definitely baste as it really helps to ensure you have the plaid correct. Just pinning -- the machine could still shift the fabric on you.

seams great is a fusible on a roll, abt, 3/4" wide and is available at JoAnns, Hancocks, and everywhere online. It is indispensable for hems, matching plaids, and a ton of other uses.
