A fellow swapper has suggested a new swap – I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts/ideas to see if anyone would be interested in a Sewing Angels swap. At the begining of the year get a partner you will have all year (see questions below). You would send them something on their birthday, send cards on holidays, etc. Just do small nice things through out the year. Our biggest concern is the year committment. After it starts you can't stop. It would not be fair to the person you get. I think too, we should agree on the holidays/birthday or whatever dates to be addressed so everyone gets the same attention. But you can do more if you want, but not less.

There would be strict rules for joining the exchange and a questionnaire would be filled out at the beginning to give you an idea of what your partner likes/dislikes.

Packages would need to be sent once a month for each month of the swap. There would be a mail-by date.

Questions: length of swap – full year? 6 months?

cost per month - $5 USD? $10 USD?

mail-by date – 1st? 15th? other date?

I’m thinking – because of pals dropping out in past swaps I’ve seen, a gift package valued at a few dollars would be appreciated from all swap participants before the swap starts in case we do end up with an orphaned swap. If we end up without any orphans, I would hold a drawing at the end of the swap so that one of the participants would win these gifts.

Hi, I'm Tammy and a budding quilter. I ran across your website by accident and I think the angel swap sounds like fun! Please give me more info so I can see if it's something I would like to take part in. Thank you very much.

Tammy (<email address removed for privacy>)

P.S. I am actually looking for a quilting penpal I can compare notes with.

would this be a like a secret sister type swap, or would the other person know whom the gifts are coming from?

You will think this is crazy, but I have been thinking about a swap just like you describe! Even though I absolutely loved the scavenger swap we just completed, I thought it would be cool to have someone to swap with on a monthly and a smaller basis, such as a small handmade item or quilty thing.
I can understand your concern about the commitment. I assume the same rule would apply about having completed one successful swap. Since it is a longer commitment, maybe they could not only complete one fabric swap, but also at least one scavenger swap. Just a thought so that no one would be left part way through the 6 months or year or whatever length of time.
How about one small gift/item per month, maybe even tie it in to a theme or holiday for the month, if there was one, plus an extra item mailed for the birthday?
Just thought this might help some. I would be interested if this does come about.

I think requiring that you complete a scavenger hunt would defeat the purpose of me suggesting a different kind of swap.
I for one think this is a neat idea. A little more than I was thinking of when I suggested a non-quilty swap but I'm game.
I think 6 months would be better for the first time around, but if it works well then maybe we could do a year long one next time.
$5 to $10 per month sounds reasonable.
15th is a good date. Gives you time during the month to think and time for them to enjoy what you send.

Pudge99, I just read the other thread about starting a non-quilty swap. Guess I should have read that first and been a little more informed before I posted ideas above. Those were just ideas that came to mind after I read postcardgirl's post, not trying to wiggle in here to change anything already in the works. I like your idea!

Gina - when I host a scavenger hunt and require that at least one other swap be completed on this board before participating, it's because we've had instances where participants have literally disappeared after receiving their packages. That's what concerns me as a hostess about a time commitment swap - that there will be people who come up missing...just a thought!

Shari,
I don't have a problem with requiring that you have completed a swap before you can join, that makes sense. I was just concerned when someone posted the idea that a person completes a successful Scavenger Hunt before being allowed into the Sewing Angels. Maybe since this is such a long time commitment you could require that the person has been an active member of the site for a certain amount of time and complete a successful swap.

What a wonderful idea. I like the idea of a 6 month swap! It is so much fun having a secret pal to spoil! I was involved in a "one time only" secret swap that lasted for at least the 4 years that I was apart of it. We would fill out a survey telling about ourselves and our likes and dislikes. The organizer would randomly match our pals. And then we would give out hints as to who our pal could be. for example," My pal used to work for a school district". or "Her name makes an animal sound! The object was to attempt to guess your pal. Its only drawback was lots and lots of mail. At the end of the swap you would send off a package with lots of goodies!!
Please include me in what ever you decide

I am interested. 6 months or 12 months would be great. But I haven't been in any swaps yet.

Hmmmm I'm glad that I have successfully completed the current swap so that If you decide to make one necessary for participation in this one, I would qualify. It really sounds like a lot of fun so count me in.
Thanks Susan

Shari,
I have missed the group very much. I had quite a few changes in the last months. My son got married and moved, my hubby, daughter and I also moved from a big old farmhouse to another town in a mobile home park. But I am back , and so sad that I missed a christmas scavenger hunt. I am really excited about your new idea about swap angels. Let me know how it is coming, or if you need any help.
Will you still do the seasonal ones for people not wanting to commit to steady swap!

Shari,

I thought this one was your baby . I will be starting some crafting and sewing swaps starting in January. We have had interest in several different types of swaps, so for the first few months I will be trying different ones to see which ones are the best. January will be patterns. Still working out the fine points on this one but it will follow the basic guidelines. I will start a new post before the weekend if all goes well.

I am not quite ready to host such an involved swap. If someone else is interested in hosting it you can step forward. I might consider it later after I have a few swaps under my belt and have worked out all the kinks.
