Does anyone know anything about White sewing machines and/or if they are good machines for quilting? Which machine(s) would you recommend? Thanks!

White is just a brand name that is owned by Viking and put on machines that they purchase from various mfgrs. Usually, you can do quite a bit better if you're looking for quality, and similar models are apt to sell for less with other names if you are shopping price. It was a model from the White line that Viking got Nancy's Notions to put their name on, which was the final straw causing "the divorce." There can always be an exception.

I own and use a white mechanical sewing machine. I bought it back about 14 to 15 years ago. All metal gears and construction. I have not replaced it and still use it as my main sewing machine. I've never had a problem with it or needed it serviced. I maintain it with cleaning and oiling. When I purchased it, I bought it from a guy who was a traveling salesman from Wisconsin. He came to our little rural towns here in Northern MI. and would set up all of the machines he was selling and you could try them all. At the time I purchased it, I think I spent around $200 or $250. I know that I have gotten my money's worth. I use it for garmet making, quilts, and crafts. I also own a serger and a heavy duty Sailrite for canvas and sailmaking.
Happy sewing/quilting/crafting
Liz

I liked the older Whites and still today I hear raves about them. I also hear horror stories about the newer Whites. I have a White 3300E embroidery machine that has been a little wonder. I really have enjoyed it..but I believe it is made by Brother.

Kylnne2 or anyone,
I have been thinking of buying the White 3300 sometime next year.
I was also thinking of purchasing a Brother CS8072 in place of my XR31 so I could have needle up down, slow speed, and more stitch options. I was looking at the White 3300 but saw the 270D and wondered if I should get that as it has the options I want in a sewing machine and seems the same as the White 3300 for embroidery.
The throat of the machine looks narrow though. I wonder if it will take the Ultimate Box and card too?
Would I be better off getting the White as it is an embroidery only machine?
I'm so new and sound confused eh?

Susie, It sounds like you are looking for both a new sewing machine and an emboidery machine. I can say yes I like my White and it is much like the Brother and Simplicity stand alone embroidery machines but if I was looking at a combo machine I might start with the new Viking Scandinavias. They have 3 models. One is a mechanical, the 200 is a computerized and the model 300 is a combo sew/embroid. It is now at a special introductory price. There are many combo machines out there and prices on these machines can be quite high. The Scandinavia 300 is offered now at less than $1000. It might be worth taking a look at it if you need a combo machine. Bernina also has a new stand alone machine. You also might want to check out the Janome site. I believe they are offering their embroidery machine free with a purchase of a sewing machine. Janome is also offering a free coverlock machine with purchase of another of their sewing machines. There are some good deals going on at this time of year. As for the other Brother machine you mentioned..the 270D or is it the 207D. I believe that is the new Walmart machine. I have not seen it except for an ad in the paper and it looks like it takes the thread cassette. I am not fond of the cassette feature so that is all I can say about that lol.

Kylnne2,
Well, I am looking for both a sewing machine and an embroidery machine.
After going to Walmart and looking at the SE270D I found out that I didn't want that machine. The throat space is way too small for a quilter and it seems to be a 3/4 sized machine. Your right about the thread thingy.....that looks like it would be a hindrance.
Price wise I can only do around $450 to $500 so I think I may get the Brother CS8072 which has all the features I want plus the size and may be looking for an embroidery machine next year and am interested in the White 3300 but am still looking.
I think having BOTH machines I can have them both running at once.
Thanks for your advice.
Appreciated,
Susie
