Does anyone know how to make scented bath salts? I would love to make my DD some for Christmas to go in a pamper kit. Can you give me some ideas of other things to put in it. I was thinking, bath salts, shampoos, some body lotions. She always comes home just whipped from her job and I want to give her something to help her pamper herself with at night. |

It's really simple. You buy the large salt they sell for ice cream makers or epsom salts (my favorite). Put it into a clear glass jar and add up to a 1/4 tsp of essential oil or perfume oil (NOT incense oil) to it. If using pure essential oils, most scents only need a drop or two for every cup of salt. If using the kind that have been cut with water or oil, you'll need to use more. If you want, you can also add food coloring, but it usually gets into the water when it dissolves & that detracts from it IMO. Again, it only takes a few drops. Seal the jar up & let it sit for a few days. The longer it sits the more the scent will permeate everything. You might want to shake the jar once in awhile, just to be sure everything gets scented. My Girl Scouts did this for their Mothers a few years ago. We also added a Rice pack, a hair turban towel. They colored the salt & then layered it in the bottle like sand art. They turned out very nice & decorative.

I made bath salts for my co-workers this past week. I used epsom salt and baking soda. (about 3 parts salt to 1 part soda) I scented it with peppermint essential oil that I bought at Bath and Body Works a few months ago for 75% off. Most recipes that I found called for a small amount of glycerin to keep it from caking, but after trying several stores for it with no luck, I just left it out. The recipe said it was optional anyway. I mixed everything up in 2 large bowls and colored one batch with red food coloring. Not much, just enough to make it pink. Then I layered the pink and white salts like peppermint candy stripes in little jars with snowmen on them that I found at WalMart. Everyone loved them. I made a little label on the computer for them with a candy cane on them. Here's another idea I found that DD and I are making for small gifts for some family members and maybe some of her teachers: Sugar Scrub: 1 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup mineral oil (I found some unscented baby oil I'm going to use) and a few drops essential oil. (we're using lavender) Put into small wide mouth jars. Jelly jars would be good. You could include a small plastic spoon attched with a ribbon for scooping out the scrub. You use it in the shower to scrub dead skin off of feet, elbows, hands, etc. Be sure to warn recipient it might make tub floor slippery. You can also use salt in place of sugar, but it does burn small cuts or scraps. If you use salt, DON'T shave your legs before using it. (believe me) I LOVE the salt scrub from Bath and Body Works, but it's sooo expensive. I think the sugar scrub will be my replacement for that and I'll just buy their essential oils. |

I heard a super suggestion just yesterday on TV.. The ETV is having their fundraiser series. The Couple that show kids concoctions were on and they showed how to make bath salts.. Epsom salts and couple drops of food coloring of course, and for flavorings, they suggested the sample perfumes the dept stores give free.. I always have 6 or 8 of those floating around the house to give away and that gives me a good way to use them up.. My body chemistry doesn't like a large variety of perfumes.. I have to stick to the spicy ones or the very light florals, or lavendar..
