Yesterday at work, I fainted. I've never done that before. I had felt light headed all morning and it suddenly got worse. I told a co-worker I felt very strange. She caught me just as my legs gave.
I went to the doctor and he said it was vertigo a.k.a. inner ear infection. He did a blood sugar test and took my blood pressure. Both were normal so he said it was vertigo and prescribed Meclizine.

Anyone ever had an inner ear infection/vertigo before? I've heard of it, but I thought you just got dizzy with it, not pass out. They didn't do any other tests besides blood pressure and blood sugar level except to ask me about being pregnant (I'm not!), so I'm not sure he was right. I'm still feeling weird. :nc:

Wow. I think you'd better insist on a 5 or so hour blood test for sugar....I think that's what they have to do to make sure. It's a "fasting" blood test.

Several years ago, I was at work when I started getting very dizzy. By the time I got home, I had to crawl up the stairs.....it was very bad. Couldn't even sit up. Turned out to be strep throat that started in my ear! But I never did pass out.

If you're still feeling bad in the morning, call the doctor and INSIST on more tests. Keep us posted!

I have had several inner ear infections that also gave me vertigo. It has been bad enough that I can not stand and if I attempted to I would get so dizzy and flush I would colaspe on the floor, but I am sure that I never passed out. I don't think passing out is part of vertigo. Maybe "webmd.com" can help?

Actually vertigo CAN make you pass out....my husband and his brother BOTH have Meineres disease. They can stand on a perfectly flat floor and fall over from vertigo. It has nothing to do with blood pressure, but everything to do with fluid building up in the inner ear. It can also cause deafness. My Grandmother went deaf in her 20's for no reason. I'm sure if she were alive today they would have told her it was Meinere's disease. She had vertigo her whole life and was on Antivert.
Meineres strikes most in their 40's-50's, but can happen much earlier. Theres med's and surgery (for the most difficult that med's don't help)

I know that when I get a sinus infection, I lose my hearing and get terrible vertigo. But if I take antiboitics (like I'm supposed to) and take care of myself, it goes away.

Many years ago I also suffered with Menieres Disease. The
Dr. put me on an anti-biotic to treat the inner ear infection
he had diagnosed. When that didn't have any effect he then put me on Antivert. This lasted for quite a few years,
then disappeared as quickly as it had come. It is no fun to
feel dizzy all the time, I hope whatever it is that is causing the vertigo will soon be cured. Thank goodness I have not
had any re-occurance of the Menieres. Keep us posted and
I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hi ladies,
thanks for the replies.
I'm still not feeling right, actually worse. I haven't passed out again, but felt like I would several times and sat down with my head on my knees til it passed.
I'm going back to the doctor this afternoon.
This is really getting to me. I have sooooo much I need to do before Christmas.

Bama, let us know what is going on.

This may just be one holiday when you cannot do for everyone else. Look after yourself.

Bama, I've had several episodes of vertigo. They were so bad I couldn't even walk without stumbling. It took about 2 weeks for them to pass even with the Antivert medication. The only time I felt good was when I was sleeping and luckily the Antivert makes me sleepy. Whenever I get these dizzy spells, my blood pressure goes sky high because of the way I feel, stressed, helpless, sick to my stomach. I hope you get a better answer as to what is causing it than I did. Keep us posted. Get better soon.

I went to the doctor and now he says it's my blood pressure. Today it was 160/100. Friday it was only 126/86. He was sure friday it was inner ear because of the ringing in my ears. :nervous: Today I also saw the nurse practitioner. He is much more thorough than my doctor.
He put me on meds and said to get it checked every couple of days for a while and see him in a month if no more problems. He did a white blood count test, potasium level, and thyroid test before I left, but I don't know the results yet. I'm to stay home until I feel normal. :nervous:

I am glad to hear you have a second opinion. With the Dr. and NP working together I am sure a diagnosis and solution
will be found soon. I hope you will start feeling better in short order. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Bama,
160/100 will do it every time.. (make you pass out)... My dear departed FIL did that more than once, before he learned to take his meds as prescribed..
My Father had vertigo from a fractured skull he suffered in a work related accident.. He learned to recognize the onset and could control his with Dramamine.. He carried them on his person all the rest of his life and it gave him no trouble.. His first attack was in the hospital riding on a gurney to the X-ray Machine.. He would get very dizzy, nausuated, and could not walk, and could not talk clearly (sounded very drunk). He also fainted a time or two in the first few attacks he had.. But , if yours is hypertension, just make sure if you feel it coming on to get at least 4 ounces of orange juice down immediately and do not forget to take your meds.!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

My blood pressure is okay now but I was still feeling the dizziness. I was sent to an ear, nose, and throat doctor yesterday. He thinks it is Meinere's disease as well as high blood pressure. He's also sending me today for an ultrasound of my neck and maybe head x-rays next week.
I'm getting tired of using all my sick days at work and paying all these co-pays. :bluesad:

I've never had many health problems until the past few months. My mom says when you get close to 40 it starts. :nervous:

My friends say that the Dramamine helps, no matter what the root of the vertigo is.. They all take it for their problems.. Some 2 or 3 of them have Menieres..

If you are diagnosed with vertigo or Meniers desease, try betahistine, it works well for me.

Hello All: My spouse has vertigo and has had it since 12/26/03. We just found out about Antivert and called our doctor but he said that they no longer manufacture it here in Canada. Does anyone have any suggestions for us?
Thanks for your replies.

I'd recommend betahistine, rather than Antivert. I had a severe and bad reaction to Antivert. Betahistine works well for me.

I've never passed out until I had high blood pressure. I've passed out several time since I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. My problem is if I get dehydrated my pressure bottoms out and that's when I pass out. I get dizzy and then pass out. Another time I did that was when I had a miagraine headache, I went to the hospital that night, I went to get out of bed the next morning to use the restroom and getting back in bed I fell out under the table next to the bed and the lamp went flying across the room with me landing under the table. It's funny now but it scared my poor hubby to death. He stayed home from work that day to make sure I was okay.

I too have vertigo but it was caused by intense meditation, 8 hours per day. I was going to be a nun and when I was young decided to meditate and pray and fast alot...then I focused so intensly that the room started shaking and I fainted too, woke up with a concussion. They checked my inner ear and hearing and I had canine hearing, more accute than human hearing. Doctors never saw that before....

So, just be aware for those of you who have vertigo...if your concentration skills are awesome and you find your attention can be easily focused, it could be what is contributing to it. My fainting was 12 years ago and I decided to not meditate so much. I still have vertigo if I meditate more than 30 minutes per day. If I concentrate too hard on anything, I get it and I'm only 34. I fainted in my early 20's.
