I have a singer model 9420 (made sometime in the mid-90's). Last night, it started having some serious problems, so I attempted to clean out around the bobbin case.

The first thing I did was to start loosening screws so that I could clean under the bobbin case. In hindsite, I can see that this was not a very smart thing to do.

Almost immediately, a little metal piece came out - it's a metal wire bent at a 90 degree angle with a hook at each end. It seems to have been held in with some sort of tension, because it sprang out really quickly. I can't figure out where it came from our how to put it back. Apparently, this is what held the bobbin case in place, because now the bobbin case won't stay put.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I tried to find some sort of schematic of the bobbin area, but that seems to be a well kept secret.

Thanks -

I did try searching for the manual, but before I put down money to buy a copy, I'd like to know whether singer manuals include detailed repair information (like "I accidentally took out this random wire - where does it go"). I don't really expect to find something like that in a user manual, but perhaps they could sell me a repair manual. I guess sewing machine repairmen have to get their information somewhere. I will call Singer tomorrow to ask them what's included in the manuals.

I am not familiar with that model Singer but the bent metal thing you said came from the bobbin area..but when you were describing it I pictured in my mind from one of my Singers long ago a piece like that that come from the feed dogs. Your feed dogs are not loose?

There may be a problem with the feed dogs - but not a big enough problem for me to notice. I'll check it out to see whether it fits nicely anywhere around the feed dog, though.

I took Chrysantha's advice and bought the manual - it didn't say anything about my little wire piece (it's still not in the machine at all), but it did tell me how to secure the bobbin case. So apparently the missing piece has nothing to do with the bobbin case.

The only problem I'm noticing now is that the lower tension is a little too loose (the manual only talks about how to adjust the upper tension). Perhaps my wire has something to do with that? Or perhaps I just loosed the wrong screw and didn't re-tighten it enough.

Fairfield on the front of your machine there may be an assembly that looks like a screw mechanismwith a disk that has numbers on it. That assembly should have a wire spring type of thing in it that your thread hooks through which is part of the tension assembly for the older machines. The wire spring thing that you have may be part of that mechanism.

There is a person that uses the on line name of singerman on the SewingWrold Commons site that might be able to help you. It seems he owns a repair shop or he is a dealer from Canada. He seems to be very free with advice in machine care, cleaning and repair.

Here are a couple of places to look for parts so that maybe it will show at least where it goes and then your manual will do the rest.

I looked for the screw mechanism that Patsy suggested, and I found a place where the piece LOOKS like it should fit, but I can't actually get it to fit well. (Incidentally, it's under the screw that I was loosening when the piece fell out, so that's probably about right.) When I put it there, it doesn't seem to make any difference. So I think that might be it except that I'm putting it in wrong.

joannequilts, Those parts sites were great. I think my piece is a "thread guide - needle bar/needle clamp." There weren't any that matched my model exactly, but they look pretty similar. Given that I have a better idea what it's called, I'll search around to see if i can find a reference for where it goes.

I'll check out the sewing world commons site, too.

Thanks a lot, all!
