Welcome!!!!!!! I made my first quilt all by hand, without knowing anything. I made every mistake you can make...including using ink to make my seam lines, cuz I was afraid I couldn't sew a straight line by hand. When I discovered the ink showed on the front of the quilt, I got a pretty floral ribbon and stitched it down, to cover the seams! All by hand, lol. I still sleep under it.

You have every thing you need. As you make more and learn more, you'll want a LOT of things, lol.....but it CAN wait! No need to put your creativity on hold. Don't forget to check your local library, there are tons of resources for FREE.

I do machine quilting now, but still prefer quilting by hand. I never mastered a hoop, and love to sit with the quilt in my lap. Very relaxing. I wish you success!

Hi Brimm,

You've found a great bunch of folks to hang out with here. No matter what quilting or sewing issue you run into, somebody here has 'been there & done that', and will have all kinds of great info for you.

You've got the tools you need to get started; heck our grandmothers rarely had more, and look at the heirlooms they produced! You'll aquire more stuff as your sewing addiction worsens :bluewink: . And no matter how long you've been at it, or how expert one becomes, we all make the goofy upsidedown quilt square or backwards sleeve set mistakes sometimes.

We all make mistakes - I always say that I'm following the tradition of not making a perfect quilt in order to show that I'm not too proud. Is that Amish? My first quilt took me 18 years - It was paper pieced hexagon that I started at Uni and my husband said he hated patchwork so it stayed unfinished in the loft for 18 years. Eventually I took it down and all to pieces, re-assembled and hand quilted it. It has a really old feel to it as the fabric scraps were all donated by all sorts of people many years ago.

Jan
I've heard of not making a perfect quilt -- or whatever sort of thing you make -- attributed to a number of cultures for several related reasons such as "not to proud," "only God can make something perfect," "for good luck."
I hear some people plan a deliberate m9istake. I am one of the fortunate few that never have to plan one. I have always been blessed with one that just appears in my work.

that is great to know im not the only one who makes mistakes! the quilt im doing was in a book i found on friendship quilts. the grandmother who posted it said her grandmother was from ireland and had made one many years back. i just fell in love with it and even though not really knowing what i was doing decided id give it a shot and try and make it ! its really not turning out so bad, i have to finished rows so far! ive been faithfully working on it every day for the last week. only 5 more rows to go lol i do have 2 pics so far but ive tried to post them and it says there to big to post so if anyone is interested i could send them to you for you to see. i would love to share!!
