My Vogue Pattern 7766 calls for "Seam Binding" with no further explantion. I didn't see a notion specifically called "Seam Binding" for sale. I do have the Wright's Lace Hem Tape and some Wright's Hem Facing Tape (which is pretty thick). The fabric is a woven--reacting like a hand-woven that tends to unravel on the edges. Would you kindly advise whether these tapes will work or if I need to buy something else? Many thanks, Amy http://www.thewearwithall.com |

I'd use the seam binding. If the store sells Wrights products it sells the seam binding, probably in several sizes. Ask a clerk. Or you can make your own but if it's not exposed that's a lot of hassle for no good reason. The binding is a colorfast, thin cotton, bias cut to stretch around curves, that will fold over and bind the seam or whatever. Dorothy |

Thanks, Dorothy. What you're describing is not the same as Bias Tape, is it? I did ask for seam binding--they looked and I looked but we didn't see it there and none of the packages said it. This will be on the inside of the skirt; it won't show. It says it's "to stay the lower edge" of the skirt yoke. Amy http://www.thewearwithall.com |

If you can't find seam binding I would use 1/4 or 1/2 in. ribbon. Grosgrain or satin would work. Seam binding is usually thinner than ribbon. I wouldn't use bias tape as it is meant to give & this would defeat the purpose of staying the edge. I haven't looked for seam binding for years but Jo Anns used to carry it. Maybe you could find someone with a stash who would share some.

I guess I've just always used bias tape and seam binding as interchangeable. If you are trying to prevent stretching you can cut a bit of selvage from the edge of cotton and stitch it along the seam line. If you are binding an edge go with the bias. Dorothy |

Abcameo, I use the 1/8 or 1/4 in wide polyester satin ribbon that comes in so many colors and you find on sale for 44 cents apiece at all the fabric shops and craft centers like Michael's or Hobby Lobby...That is a good stay stitcher.. I make tons of t-shirts and that is what I use on the shoulder seams all the time... (so economical)... I haven't seen the seam binding in a few years... I think with so many people having sergers nowadays, it kinda wiped out the market for seam binding..Maybe they quit making it.. Sew With Love

Oh, good--so it wasn't just my imagination when I couldn't find seam binding anywhere. Polyester ribbon sound perfect--inexpensive, easy to find and I probably even have some in black here at home already. Thanks for helping. I've got the skirt started but it came to grinding halt till I found out what to use at this point in the pattern. Gratefully, Amy The Wear-with-All http://www.thewearwithall.com |

You can use twill tape or there is a new clear tape that can be used to stabilize too.

Pam, the reason I started using the ribbon is because the twill tape only comes in black and white, and I wanted to match the color as near as possible on the t-shirts..and the ribbon is much, much less expensive than the twill tape.. Sew With Love
