Note - this has been posted in "sergers" as well. Apologies to mods if this is not allowed.

Hello there, I am on the verge of buying a serger, with which I intend to make what I hope will come to be the majority of my clothes, and possibly sell a few pieces. Not actually start a business as such, but make things of professional quality - hopefully indestinguishable from the 'real thing'.
I definitely want a good 5-thread, but I am wondering if a domestic machine will not produce the same standard of results as an industrial. I know industrials have a speed advantage - this is really of little concern to me though. Will there actually be a poorer finished garment if I go with a domestic machine?

Help would be much appreciated - thanks.

Having worked with both machines, I find that there is very little difference. I did like the industrial machine because it will handle heavier material, the speed as you mentioned. The stitches on a industrial have to be set with cams, where as a domestic machine you can adjust yourself. Threading on a industrial can be a pain sometimes. Needles are not the same that you would use for a domestic machine also the knives. Both of these items can be a big $$$$ factor for you to consider.
Would I have a industrial machine for my home use, YES!!!! And not only because I was spoiled by working on them everyday when I was working. If I could afford one I would have one, along with a single needle, binder, hemmer, button holder, bar tacker. A girl can dream can't she????

I think that a properly adjusted good domestic machine will probably result in simular results to a commercial model. There is a definate difference between machine lines though. I found this out years ago when I was looking at sewing machines. There is also a big difference between machines within a company's lines...some speciality machines may not have the strength, stitch and reliability you are looking for. The main difference is the abuse that an industiral machine will take and as previously mentioned by Sewhappie, the number of layers that the machine will pierce. The abuse is pretty well addressed by the industry in not always honoring the warrenty on a domestic machine that has been used for business. Many companies also address the power (piercing) ability of the machines too as part of their sales pitch. My old Bernina sewing machine was rated to pierce a very large number denium layers, but I could never imagine that you could get that number of layers under the foot. However, it does a beautiful job of making a straight even stong stitch and it also does pierce a large number of denium layers. I've heard some older advertising for Viking and how many layers they were penetrate. However, different machines specialize in different areas and you just need to contact some good dealers and see what the recomend and test them. Especially in purchasing a serger, you'll really need to look carefully. You may find the best serger is not even one that you would expect since everyone is concentrating right now is on quilting and embroidery, not serging...there was a time when sergers were really a hot item. It is just like buying a car or any other large purchase....only there is a chance you will own this machine much longer than any car you'll ever have.

Sewhappie, where did you work and who did you work for? I did sewing foryears working for Vanity Fair, also worked for an off shoot company called Snow Creek.

I loved working on industrial machines, but we had two repair men at the factory that did nothing but keep our machines working. So picking an idustrial machine might mean it would be harder to find a person with the knowledge to work on it should it break down.

sewingnonie,
I worked for a orthodic company here in Ohio, it was right here in town, that has since been sold and moved out of state. We made various supports for just about anything a person could strain, sprain or even break!!!!! Also a line for pregnant women.
Before that I was at a childrens clothing company that closed due to poor money management on the part of the owners.
I would love to get back into industrial sewing again, BUT.... the jobs are just not out there here in my part of Ohio. And any that are in the state are over 4 hours away from me. :nervous:
We had repair men come in from Cleveland, and you had to learn as much as you could about basic machine maintence when the repair man was there.

Our OSU hasn't been ranked in my memory...ever....until this year but they've still spoiled Oklahoma Univiersity's perfect record several times....and kept them out of National Finals. I've learned never to count them out. I'm sure it will be a great game and I'm positive OSU will win. I jsut hope it's OUR OSU!

Pam OK State has been ranked several times in the national top 25 over the last 5 or 6 years. It's just that they don't always end up that way. They were ranked pretty high nationally last year with an 11-2 record. They played in the Houston Bowl and won. My DH has been an OK State fan for 27 years and had the same season tickets that long so in our house, a lot of OK State info hangs around. Also, my niece/god daughter is married to an OH State graudate (Dr. Chris). So, we're with you, we're pretty OSU will win but we don't know if they'll be wearing red and gray or orange, black and white.

I honestly didn't realize that OSU (OK) has been ranked that high that often. They have a very good team this year...but anytime they play OU I hold my breath...they seem to ALWAYS have their number...I'll sure be rooting for them in San Antonio...I'd would have loved to see them ranked in the top 5 this year...maybe NEXT YEAR!!!!
