Just wanted to say hello as a new member of sew what's new.

Also, a tip for a quick gift for that new parent on your Christmas list: Sew an infant sling-type carrier. The basic shape is like an hourglass, only not quite so narrow in the middle. Once you have the shape, you sew the 'bottom' and 'top' of the hourglass together, then fold and tack with a zig zag the outer edges of the very middle to make a narrower place that will be at the top of the parent's shoulder. I know these directions are vague, but it really is a simple job once you envision it...try a muslin sample first after looking at photos of slings on the web. You don't have to make it adjustable around the shoulder if you have an idea of how large or small the recipient is...I like to use denim and line the sling in cotton flannel or broadcloth.

Not sure if there is a website pattern, but 'Sew N Go Baby' includes a pattern in the book. Once you see a sling, they are pretty easy to make and work up very quickly. The baby is nestled against the mom or dad in a way similar to being in the womb, and it is better for the still-developing spine to be supported this way as opposed to the upright/backback/frontback type carriers which put too much pressure on the pelvic area. As the child grows, the parent can easily let the child sit upright.

Merry Christmas to everyone!

Hmmm...I can almost picture it, Wendy! About how wide do you make the middle of the hourglass?? This would be a great gift for my daughter and brand new grand daughter!
