My friend would like an A-Line skirt for her daughter. I have a pattern for a straight skirt, could I alter it to make an A-line? How would I go about that? Can it be done or would I be better to go by a new pattern?

Just pivot the pattern line at the hips and you should be fine. It isn't that big of a deal except to decide how wide you want the a-line. Use the same straight of grain (or center fold) and you should be fine. You get the same effect if you split the pattern and pivot it out (in this case) as if you just use a yard stitck and add the line to the outside.
