Hi all,
i am so delighted to have found this awesome site  I am new to quilting and sewing and have a few questions. I would be really glad if someone can help me solve the problems.
1) I have brother machine, a lower end model. My machine is doing good overall but the thread or the needle keeps on breaking. Can someone help me as to why thats happening?
2) I got McCalls patterns for bags the other day from Joann. The problem is i don't know what to do with it. I mean i just did not know how to use it and the instructions i found quite inadequate. can some body pleaseeeeee help me what is to be done with that and how is it to be used?
Thank youuuuuu allll

The tension could be too high or the machine could not be threaded properly...check both of these and let us know

What is the pattern number so that i can look it up and possibly we can walk you thru your problems...

Also is there some language on the pattern instructions that you dont understand...if so let us know and we can help with that

Your needle could also be in backwards. I don't know about this particular machine but on most machines the flat part of the needle goes toward the back of the machine. There are plenty of Brother users that can correct me if I am wrong. The needle needs to be inserted as far as it will go too. Have you changed spools of thread? Once in a while you can get a bad spool of thread. The easiest way that I know to find out is to change the thread and do a little test sewing.

thanks for your reply. I have tried fixing the needle and the thread. we'll see if it works :bolt:
for pattern i was reading in english but i do not even know if the pattern is to be sewed or pinned to fabric. The pattern number was Mcalls 3894. I would appreciate if anyone can tell me the procedure for using patterns step by step. :re:

regarding your thread breaking and the needle, is your needle the right size for your thread? if it is too large or too small breakage occurs, plus your needle and thread need to match your fabric, bummer eh? now you're going whataya mean there are different sizes of thread and needles!!
a good general sewing book might help, simplicity makes one that walks you through everything from how to thread a needle to laying out a pattern etc. Simply the Best Sewing Book, good place to start, Good Luck!

Thread your machine except for the needle. If you pull on the thread it should not just "fall" through the machine but there should be a slight drag more like you were feeding it lightly through your fingers. If there is too much drag, you may have a tension problem or your thread may be hanging on something.

make sure your thread is not hanging up somewhere like, on the cut in your thread spool or something like that... that can very easily lead to thread breaks...

just my 2 cents..
