I found a pattern for a poncho that is made out of sheer material....it calls for a rolled hem edge......

What the heck is that?? Do you need a special foot to do it on your machine??

Help!!! :nc:

It is a narrow hem that is folded once and then folded again. The folds are equal. If you do it by hand it is usually 1/4 inch turned and pressed and then turned and pressed again. Once you have pressed your hem you stitch near the top folded edge. You can purchase feet the will do the hem for you. They are usually 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 inch rolled hemmers. If you had a roller hemmer foot, it would be retangular shaped, extending forward 1 1/2 inch or so, with a split down the center and a curl beside the split. You feed your fabric into the curl. You can also buy a rolled hemmer that makes a scalloped hem. The feet are a little tricky to use but once you get the idea, they can save hours. You can also do a rolled hem on a serger. In the case of a serger hem, it is a narrow bound hem.

Jada,
Did you adjust your stitch lever? On my serger, it is located in front of the knife and pulls toward me for roll and pushes away for overlock. What brand serger do you have?

On some sergers you have to change the plate that is over the feed dogs (needle plate) to convert to a rolled hem. Your manual should give you instructions for setting your machine for this feature.

I will have to check the feet that came with my machine and compare them to what you described.
Plus I suppose I can read in my manual too!
Thanks for your assistance~

Here's a fast way to make a rolled hem. I'll try to explain so you can understand. First of all, stitch straight around the edge of the fabric 1/4 inch from the edge; then turn that edge up right along where you stitched and start stitching as you turn it up. Once you have it turned up 1/4 inch and stitched around, turn it up one more time and stitch along the top edge; voila, you have a rolled hem. Does this make sense to you?

That is how i do my regular hems...so to do that on the serger i need to disengage the blade right?

I have a Simplicity Serger and have tried and tried to follow the steps in the book but fail everytime. I do have to change the plate and etc. but it is really worth it or is it easier just keep doing it the way i do it

I've never been able to do a rolled hem on my serger either. Of course, I haven't tried all that hard.

Some people have two sergers, and they keep one set up for a rolled hem all the time. I have two of them, but one is threaded with white and one with black. Talk about lazy!!!

What a minute!!!
I am trying to do this on my regular machine...I don't have a serger!!

Patsy~
Let me see if I have this right from your instructions......
You go all the way around you once, making a small hem as you go, then go around a second time and do another hem along the edge??

I will have to give this a try!

I did check my new owners manual for my machine and do think I have that special foot. I did find that my machine can do some pretty cool stitches!

Was looking at a stitch called a scallop stitch..that might work on the ponchos too!! I will have to just try and see!! This is gonna be fun!
