I have been watching in horror at the tragedy in Sri Lanka and neighboring countries that have been affected by that terrible tsunami wave. What devastation. Canada has donated four million dollars and supplies. My heart goes out to anyone who has relatives or friends caught in this terrible world tragedy.

Oh man...I've seen the aftermath of hurricanes and I KNOW what water can do. I feel so sorry for ALL those people and their families. I'm just grateful to live in a country that sends aid wherever it's needed. I'm hoping the death toll doesn't rise from disease..... Chrys

That magniture of that kind of devastation kicks you right in the [excuse my language but I don't know anything that describes it better] gut when you see it. I don't think anyone of us can imagine that kind of devastation and death. The closet I've been to something like that was Hurricane Andrew in South Florida and the F5 tornado here in Oklahoma City a few years ago but I'm sure that neither one of those come close to this disaster. I heard that there is one place that they are unable to get any information from or be able to get to!!! I'm sure once they are able to get into that area that the toll will be even higher!!! It's hard to beleive that with all the technology we have today that they could not see this coming sooner. I know that we have the ability to do so here on the U.S. shores. I am just having a hard time picturing something moving at 400-500 mph!!!! |

They might have been able to predict the earthquake, although it was in the middle of the ocean so I don't know, but I don't think that they could have predicted the extent of the earthquake or the effect it could have. Some areas were hit within 2 minutes of the quake. Given the fact that these people were just going about their daily business, working, swimming, sleeping, whatever, I think that it is unlikely that even if they could have gotten the notice out that many would have known or could have reacted in time. If they had only a couple minutes notice, I don't know what they could have done. An earthquake 9 or over on the Ricter Scale is incredible. I feel so sorry for the people who are without homes, family members, food, good water...the basics of life. When I think how poor these countries are and how heavily populated they are, it is just so sad. I can't imagine being a tourist so far from home and stranded on top of that.

The numbers are growing with every news broadcast. Some of the outlying islands are totally wiped out. It is a world tragedy.

It seems to me that sooner or later they will have to do a census of people that are living so they can determine who is missing and try to get some of the families back together. My cousin's neighborhood outside of Chicago was devasted by a tornado during the 5 o'clock hour many years ago. Many of those people didn't find each other for a day and that was a SMALL area with only a few people affected. I can't imagine how you would go about finding your living relatives and friends after this big a disaster. You know that at any time of the day many family members go to work, shopping, school, etc. It would be so hard. Not to mention that just common land marks are gone.

Will you donate something. I will. I have to, my conscience won't let me do anything else. This is just such a huge world problem. It's not going to go away anytime soon and we can't ignore it.

I'm proud of my little country - the Goverment has given £50 million and the people another £32 million - it is literally a drop in the ocean. Latest reports estimate about 7 billion is needed. The earthquake was so devasting it rocked the earth in it's orbit. This is where we are just one family. I was so saddened by the fact that in India ( the other side of the ocean) there are towns where an entire generation of children have been wiped out.
love and kisses, Jan
