You know there is something very sad about taking down the Christmas Tree and putting every thing away. I have things on my tree that were my grandparents, my parents, what my kids and I got, and now what my husband and I have gotten together. The tree always gives me such good memories of Christmas's past. I remember going to my grandparents every year. I remember going out in the woods and cutting down our tree with my dad. I remember the happy faces of my kids when we got everything out the 1st of December. Its just sad to put it all away. It takes me all day.

I know what you mean. When I see the stuff from my childhood trees it brings back so many memories. Sometimes I can laugh, but many times I have tears seeing those things. They are great memories, but just once I wish I could have a special Christmas back again.

Taking down the tree this year was just as enjoyable as putting it up. My friends and I had a great time, as I showed them all my homemade, dexterous ornaments and tree embellishments. Most of my ornaments are recent, so I don't have many memories with them, yet.

Traditionally here, we don't take the tree down until 6th Jan, the 12th day of Christmas. Many people don't put it up until Christmas Eve, we tend to a litle earlier and by the time 6th Jan is coming round I'm longing to have the house back to normal again. I may well take it down before term starts this year! We are back on the 3rd.
All the decorations that I remember from my childhood are lost in various moves. We have our own traditional decorations from when our kids are little - the red telephone box always goes on, as well as the panda at the top of the tree.

I will tell you a little story. Years ago my cousin who lives in England came home. She was born and raised here and married a guy in England when she was stationed there. Anyway, she came home with husband and daughters for Christmas. They got to my aunts house 10 days before Christmas. The first thing my aunt did when they got there was put up the tree. My cousin, husband and daughters were shocked because they put theirs up on Christmas Eve. My cousin has lived in England for 40 years and has forgotten how her parents did things especially around the holidays. All in all I think the kids learned that every body has different customs and I enjoy hearing about them.

I've always been bemused by American friends who put theirs up at Thanksgiving. Mind you, they can't quite get it round their heads that we don't celebrate 4th July or Thanksgiving either.
Then there is Mother in Law - who has hers up all year round hiding under a cover!

Year before last my neighbor across the street left her tree up till July...she wasn't in the mood to take it down....she apologized about it all the time to the rest of us...I didn't care...a house around the corner kept theirs up ALL year one year...(it was in the front window and the lights were lit every night). I put mine up about the 1st of Dec and take it down on the 1st of Jan. (it's artificial so it really doesn't matter when it goes up or comes down).

I don't mind putting up or taking down the tree. I have lots of ornaments from when I was a child that my Mom gave me before she died and it brings back fond memories of her. I also have loads of ornaments my daughters and I made...some are too old and fragile to actually go on the tree now but they lovingly looked at each year and then put back in the box. On a sad note, my dear cousin in Chicago said his tree fell over Christmas morning and most of the old ornaments that were his mothers were broken in small pieces. He was very upset. These were so dear to her that he cherished them and he lost most of them. I suggested he try ebay to see if can find some that are similiar. Every year we have both happy and sad memories to deal with, don't we? Tis the season for reflection for sure.
