My grandbaby isn't born yet and my other new grandbaby isn't here so I need some info from anyone who knows the answer to my question. What size do you cut the elastic for the waist and legs of panties for a newborn. I finished an outfit but now need to do the elastic in the legs and waist and don't know what size to insert. Says to measure the waist, how can I do that one since she's still in her mother's stomach. That would be a hard job don't you think? I went on a website that sells diapers and the measurements for the waist for premade diapers was between 15 and 21 inches for the waist and the legs was 8 - 10 for 18 inch rise. This is for a newborn. Does that sound right to you all? I want to finish this tonight and move on to the rest of the sewing for her. Thanks in advance. |

That sounds about right to me. Since my baby girl is 13 it has been a long time but I would use those measurements.

Thanks MomofSix I finished it and it worked out okay I think. I'll have to let the legs out if it's not and the waist but that's okay. It looks right I hope it's not too tight. It came out cute. It is a dress with bloomers. I used a heart pattern fabric and put red ladybugs around the bottom of the dress. I ran out of braid so I'll have to make a trip to Joann's some day soon but it's finished except for the last few inches of braid. That's what I get for trying to use up braid I already had. |

You bet they are wonderful. They just double time me with them all the time. Last ones they had they had three in one year. Those are all now 10 going on 11 so this is quite a surprise for me to have little ones to sew for. I wasn't sewing much when the others were born. So when I started sewing again I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice to have a little one to sew for and my prayers were answered. They are all my even the big ones. The oldest is 14 now. |

Susie, If you use that clear elastic, for baby goods, it works better than the regular, because it stretches so far, and doesn't bind.. I always stretch it in my hands before I insert it anywhere.. Seems to help somehow.. I used it on all of Stephanie's baby stuff .. She's 7 now..We never had any problem with any of the clothing we used it in..I could not measure her a lot of the time, and DIL was afraid she would do it wrong.. Sew With Love

My one month old measure 15 inches around the waist and 5.5 inches around the top of his thigh hope that gives you a general idea of size, he is about 10lbs or so Jeanette

Oh Monmmy, Thanks for both your quick answer. That it about what I made the waist. The next one I cut out had the elastic guild to go by. I should have checked both patterns before asking. Libby, Where do you get this clear elastic from? It sounds comfortable for a baby. I hate using elastic on a baby but how else are you going to hold their panties up if not? LOL |

Dorothy, That would be so cute wouldn't it? LOL I'd hate to see her change the babies diaper with that idea. LOL This girl would probably get the suspenders and the baby all tangled up. I worry about this one, poor thing she's not rapped too tight, if you know what I mean. She went to move my sons gun he used for work, and she shot herself in the leg. She's accident prone and dingy. She needs lots of prayers. |

Susie, Its on the notions wall. Just look for a card with the little hard plastic box-like on the front.. It comes in at least 2 widths that i know of and probably more.. either 1/4 and 3/8 or 1/4 and 1/2 I'm not sure which..Its marked Clear Elastic. That girl sounds like a friend at work before I retired.. This is the God's honest truth-- At her shower, she opened my package of receiving blankets and bibs and when someone said "what nice sized receiving blankets" , she said, "oh, to receive friends and visitors in ??" This person was a computer programmer and a genius in her work, but not much of a homebody.. But she turned out to be a great mother..She was a quick study.. Sew With Love

LOL Thanks Libby, this poor girl is very young. She's only 19 and poor thing as dingy as they come. She was on the floor laughing when the police and paramedics came saying "I thought a gun shot was suppose to hurt, this don't hurt" Then she told the police she didn't remember how it happened that she went to move the gun and it went off. My husband said she probably was clicking the trigger that's how it went off. Poor kid she was okay the bullet didn't hit her bones or anything thing just the fleshy part of her leg. One good thing came out of this my son got rid of the gun. He almost went crazy worrying about her until they told him she was okay. The gun is gone and Mama is happy. I hate guns. I will look for that elastic when I go to Joanne's. I don't think our Walmart carries it. I have to go for more trim anyway I ran out. |

a loaded gun unattended in the house???!!!! ACK! living in canada that is such a foreign concept, my husbands guns have to be unloaded and trigger locked and are stored in a separate room from the ammunition. your son didn't have the safety on? I'm glad it's gone too!!

Yes it was loaded and the safety was on but somehow she clicked it off. When he came home from work he handed her the gun to put up in the locked box he uses to store it in when he's home and that's where she was headed when it happened. He had to use the bathroom quickly or he would have done it hisself. He works as a wrecker driver in the city and has come close to getting mugged and they are killing people left and right here for small change right now so he got a permit and used it for work. He's no longer in that field any more but even so he got rid of the gun after it happened. I hate guns I don't own one and will never own one, with my luck I'd shoot myself and do the job for the robber or rapist so I'd rather take my changes and be alive. |

I had a HS friend whose Dad kept guns loaded and left out all over the house. Our first year of college we went home for the weekend. When he went into his house and slammed the door a shotgun fell over and discharged and hit him. No one was home and he bled to death. He had come home to surprise his parents!

Oh how sad, I hate guns. I use to fuss at my FIL who was a policeman about leaving guns around. He said he raised his kids in his house with guns and taught them gun safety and they never mess with his guns. My Dad hated guns as much as I do and we never owned a gun when I was growing up either. |
