I have been on a diet (kinda) since last September. No white food (as Oprah says) I bought some ice cream for myself that was carb free. Which is better, carb free or fat free? The store carried both. Are these foods really ok or am I fooling myself?

Mary --
I try to balance between fat and carbs -- and keep my eye on calories too.
I tend to lean toward keeping the fat down.
A couple minor injuries since Thanksgiving kept me off the exercise machines but I started again this morning. I ate a lot of bad stuff over the holidays and I have to work it off.
And you are not as bad as my husband who came home with a tub of Death by Chocolate ice cream -- not low fat or low carb!!
I had a cup of hot chocolate with skim milk and Splenda and felt very self-righteous.

As far as I'm concerned, ice cream is ice cream ... but ... I usually tend to get the fat "reduced" ice cream just because there's almost no after taste and I like the texture better and to be honest, I didn't know there was carb free ice cream

I'm a low carber and have been for a few years now.
I eat as much fat as I want. I'm never ever hungry.
I'm 118 pounds and have no problem staying there eating this way. I don't eat the white stuff.
The fact is that our bodies burn carbs first then fat so if you are eating carbs a lot your body never gets around to burning the fat......THUS.......fat storage.
I love eating this way.

Susie, I think I can be a no-carber too. At least low carb. The only problem I have is with brown rice. I liked it at first, now YUCK!!! I have sweet potatoes instead. I can see the difference in my legs and stomach. I just have to start exercising a bit. :nervous:

I don't think anyone should ever be a NO carber. Carbs are important but the good ones and in moderation.
I can live without rice. :o)
I don't eat sugar, flour, potatoe, macaroni or bread. I do eat low carb breads in moderation and low carb marcaroni.
I find that I have TONS of energy.
Hope the best for you,

My brother went on a low carb diet this fall and boy does he look good. He really got the hang of it.

There's also a low carb cooking show, on the Food Network I think. It's really good and the recipies are usually pretty easy.

Low carb is better than low fat...I was on a fat free diet for a year. (because of something they couldn't diagnose at first) my hair fell out and I couldn't remember words or hold a converstion for more than two minutes. You need a certain amount of fat in your diet to be healthy....carbs, not so much....

Remember no diet is healthy if you eliminate a food group completly. I have found the only thing that works for me is to stay busy so I don't eat as much. since I started working in Sept I have dropped 10 -15 lbs. (I don't know exactly because I don't weigh myself often.) I go by how my clothes fit & how I feel. I found that over vacaton I was eating all the time so I started sewing which kept me away from the food & I got 4 new shirts out of it. I eat whatever I crave just not as much as I used to. We eat a lot of carbs in our house just because it is cheap & quick to fix. But I have gone to buying more brown bread & not cooking as much or putting it into 2 pans & freezing 1/2 so we don't eat as many seconds.

I would say neither. Portion size is usually the problem, so everything in moderation is the key. Of course, too much fat will cause hidden problems for the heart, so low fat is important. Carbs are necessary, and a healthy portion is about the size of your fist.
Take care,

Well Ladies you are all right but....................everything has to be in moderation. No carbs is bad, your brain needs carbs to function, and no fat is bad your body needs that also. A well balanced diet with portion control is the best way to go. I've lost 46 pounds since May on Weight Watchers and I've only gained in all those weeks twice. One pound in Oct when I went to that sewing conference and the other time was Christmas week I gained .4 pounds. This week I lost another 1.4 pounds. The trick is to eat what you like just in moderation. I eat ice cream but only ½ cup of fat free No sugar ADDED, not sugar free. It's only one point on weight watchers and it's Blue Bunny and it's delicious. Don't taste like diet. Hubby eats it sometimes and can't tell the difference. Bread I get the 40 calorie per slice bread and it's good. Sometimes to get use to eating the low calorie things you have to trick your taste buds a little. I started out drinking 2% milk, then I went to 1% and now it's No fat milk. Taste good to me now but if I would have went from whole milk to No fat milk I would have said YUCK!!! No problem now. Same with butter. I use to eat butter on my baked pot, yes I eat potato and I can on WW. but now I use the No fat spread that taste like butter and it's good. Another thing I do is eat a lot of grapes, oatmeal with Splenda as a snack at night before going to bed. It fills you up and it's not that much calories. I'm never really hungry and I eat a lot. And when I feel like having something sweet, I eat it and then it's over with I don't eat the whole bag of cookies like before I eat one or two and get them out of sight. I don't feel deprived and I still lose every week. It's working and I'm happy and don't feel like I'm dieting. Hope this helps. If you want to join you can read about it at the website, www.weightwatchers.com   If I can do it anyone can. It's healthy
