It was at Angelfire.com, then found the sight for Dave'sWorld Avatars. I hit on it by way of www.Mamma.com ( it stands for Mother of All Search Engines), it's like google. I just happen to like this one better. |

I made mine myself... just now, especially for here. One of my other hobbies is computer graphics. I used my graphics software to modify a photo of an Ohio Star block from one of my quilts, adding my name on top, tweaking it all a little, and hey presto! I resized to standard avatar size (75x75 px) and saved it in .gif format to reduce file size, uploaded it from my hard drive, and here it is. ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

Hehehe, but please resist the temptation to wack me when I tell you that it is also called the Texas Star, the Lone Star and the Variable Star as well.

Oh golly, have I just started a potential inter-state war! Well, hopefully no Texans will turn up and try and grab it back. I'll just have to duck and see where else I can stir up a spot of mischief. Sewhappie, I think it is probably more commonly known as the Ohio Star. But on the other hand, it does look a bit like a Lone Star, don't you think...? Right, I'm outta here. G'day Heartland! I like the Adobe family of software. I used Photoshop Elements 2.0 to make that little graphic. Elements is the "little brother" version of Photoshop 7 which is the professional package and very expensive. It has almost as much capability, and certainly as much as I would want to use as an amateur. I do a lot of repair and reconstruction work on old, faded and torn family photos by digitalizing them and then working to make them like new again. Just a hobby, though. ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

Hehe, listen up all you Ohio types... I am quoting Carrie Hall (1866-1955) who is regarded as a "great" in the historical quilt circles for her contribution to standardizing quilt pattern nomenclature. In her book "The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America" (1935) she calls the exact same block by all of those names! Barbara Brackman in her own encyclopaedic compilation also refers to the same block with all those interchangeable names. Of course, you can change the looks of the block by changing values within its separate parts. And I have no idea who called it what first in the very beginning. I wonder if we will ever get to discover that? Time for some ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

G'day MIL Hey, you called me a great name there! Lots of people have done that, and naturally I approve. I also get called Guilty quite a lot - and that would be fitting as well. I am always guilty of something (mostly of pulling people's legs). I'm a quality guilty Quilty. The Tsunami had no bad affect down here in New Zealand. It really was centred around Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. The devastation is pretty terrible there, but we did not get it here. ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

Sorry about the mistake Quilty. You'll have to excuse me, I always have the excuse I am dyslexic. LOL My husband thinks I just procrastiate too much but I think I act before thinking sometimes too much so you see I'm really all messed up. But I love the ribbing. I'm glad you are okay, the entergy went north of you then. Or was it not close to you at all. I know Indonesia is above Australia and you are sort of south of there but I didn't know how far everything was apart. Probably several thousand miles away, I was never good with Geography in school. Just what I hear on the news and the little I see on the internet. Funny it interest me now but I have no time to research things like that now. As a matter of fact I didn't know there was a Sir Lanka until this thing hit there. Live and learn. You must be waking up to a new day where you are and I've not been to bed here yet. It's 12:30AM and I'm not at all sleepy. Gotta go, Ga Day Mate. |

Oh weeeee!!! The days fly past so fast. I've been on vacation. I took my teenager son and drove 2,300 kms around our South Island, showing him the marvellous sights and doing fun things - jet boating on a fast rocky river, helicopter ride, three runs on a luge, gondola, 4WD trip on a precipitous narrow dirt road over mountains, gold panning, launch ride on a lake to sight a very rare native bird (we spotted 2 of them), another lake ride on a steam vessel which he got to fire (shovel the coal) as a special privilege, scenic train trip, visit to chocolate factory, nice restaurants, wine tasting, nice hotels, sunshine all the way. We had an absolute ball. Hubby had not wanted to come. I love that part of the country - it's my home. Got home last night (train and ferry again) - er, rather tired. MIL, no worries about the mistake. It was funny and made me laugh. But I think I've hi-jacked this thread. It was supposed to be about avatars. Anyone, feel free to take it back and talk on topic again! ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

Don't be guilty, Quilty! That was the type of holiday that you and he will remember 'till you are both old and grey! That type of parent time is precious and teens are great fun to be with. My daughter and I had a fab prehistoric tour around the part of France where we were staying, ah gotta love those dolmens! I bought my Husband elements for Christmas - he's played around with it a bit but I've yet to see any spectacular results. He won a prize in a national photo competition last year for a photomanip he did in graphic converter and the judges all thought it was photoshop.(It was to celebrate the discovery of the structure of DNA - he took a photo of the spiral staircase that goes up the putside of the lab where Watson and Crick worked and turned it into a double helix - clever 'huh?) love and kisses, Jan

Yay, you put this thread almost back on topic again... talking about Elements and your clever husband's photography! The problem with taking my son on such a fun trip - he won't want to fly the nest! Well, to provide some balance I am insistent that he pick up in his room and do those other ordinary chores that teenagers are far too tired to be doing. But back to avatars... ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,

Green grinning face......reminds me of a crocodile coffee is a good move - I take it you won't be going to bed soon? Quick, back on topic or Mary will scowl at us! Have you tried restoring old photos? I have a coloured black and white photo of my brother and I. It is looking the worse for wear and is the only picture we have of us as little kids - the colour cast has gone wrong. I would love to be able to send him a copy which had been adjusted near the original - is elements versatile enough for this? Should I give it to hubby as a little project? love and kisses, Jan

G'day you insomiac types! Magot, I use Elements to restore old photos and that includes dealing with the colour cast or fading, plus any foxing (the brown speckles) and other marks. You can also re-colour it in sepia tones. Elements has a great many tools and is ideal software for the job you describe. Yes, give it to hubby to have a go on. If you scan the original, and then he works on a duplicate of the scan, then it doesn't matter if he messes it up by any experimenting in order to learn what works best. He can always start again on a new duplicate image. Yep Sewhappie, our trip was heaven - and kiddo wants to go back and do it all over again next week. ...and then my heart with pleasure fills,
