Does anyone know a site where measurments are given for crib bumper pads? I have a pattern that says to use batting for inside....seems too whimpy to me and I am using 2" foam but I need to know the size before I cut. |

I got the coats and clark nursery how to book from the library. and the bumper pattern on there is for foam not fleece. I made both, unfortunately I can't recall the measurments though. chrisitne Christine

I was warned by a friend who made some for her sis-in-law to find out the measurements of the individual crib or make four separate pieces rather than one that goes all the way around. She made one based off of her own crib and when it got mailed to her sis-in-law it was 6 inches too short. I think if you are using a couple of layers of batting that would be firm enough (you'd want to use the high loft batting). Ticia |

I used batting on both sides of the bumper pads I made for my kids. I used a pretty heavy batting. They were fine. I sewed the batting in the tops of each pad and treated them like a self lining. It worked well. the long pads went down each side and tied at the corners of the crib; they had stitching that divided them in about thirds. The only thing is that now a days they are considered to be suffocation hazzards (isn't everything). I don't know if your ped. would want you to use them.

I think a lot depends on how you attach them to the cot - a lady in my antenatal group had her daughter die when the tie got caught around her throat. Using small velcro clasps that go around the bars of the cot would solve this. I would also tuck the bumper in down behind the mattress to stabilise it in the cot. I used mine and would again - you just have to be sensible.

The Kwik Sew Baby book gives 162 inches as a lengh for the bumper pads. I know when I made bumpers for the grands I used High Loft batting and sewed a piece to each piece so when I put the sandwich together there was a double layer of batting and my DD and DDIL both said that it was a good thickness. I also use short ties with velcro on the ends so that the ties would be short and not pose a danger to baby. I know that Hancocks fabric also sells the batting precut in a package with complete directions also.

If you're in a hurry, I've used white or pastel ready-made crib bumpers and just cut covers of the nursery fabric. Use a 1/2" seam allowance, add ties where the original had them (cut the originals off), sew the top seam, and then just fold your cover over the pads, fold in the seam allowances on the ends and top-stitch, then do the same thing with the bottom seam. Works great! |
