Hi Everyone,
I Am Happy To Be Back To My Sewing Site After Some Problems That Prevented Me.
I Hope I Can Get Some Help . After Months Of Struggling With
This Jacket, I Have Finally Gotten To The Buttonholes And Found
From Handling The Garment So Much My Markings Are Gone
This Pattern Is Not Recommended For A Beginner But I Really, Really Liked It (what A Sport) Lois Ericson. Can Someone Please Tell Me If There Is A General Rule For Placing The Buttonholes? Are They Suppose To Be Spaced Equally Apart?
I Have Learned In This, Not To Work Beyond My Knowlegde.

Thank You For Any Advice

Hi Sewfree. Your buttonholes are supposed to be spaced evenly apart. I usually begin with the first one being right at bust level. From there I think 3 1/2" is about the proper space between each button but it depends on the garment. Does anyone else have an opinion?

Mary, that is exactly how I have always placed mine and never had any "peep holes". :bg:

There is a really neat placement gadget that you may someday want to purchase. It is called a Simflex. It looks like one of those inexpensive (accordian) folding hat racks you find at Wal Mart. It has measurments and places for pins or marking your buttonholes with chalk. When you pull it out, it allows you to mark perfect buttonhole/button placement, no matter how close together or far apart you want you place them.

Do what Mary said as your first step.. That is the MOST important buttonhole on any top you make.. Then guesstimate where the top one should be next, and do you need another between those 2?? Make the rest equal distances apart..

Thank You All For The Advise On How To Place These
Buttonholes. I Started At The Bustline With The Frist One
As Suggested And Went From There And They Are Spaced
Just Right. I Am Pleased At How It Finally Turned Out.
And Now I Am Looking Forward On Being Able To Start A
Project With The Group. And Thanks Again For Being There
With Your Help.

Another easy tip to remember is that they are placed about a fist sized width apart.
