Is Thread magazine a good one to get? I have never looked at one but got a card in the mail to get a free copy. Is it worth the money to get it?

I like Threads but I subscribed to Clothtide and love it. I've used several of the ideas I found in this magazine. I think it's cheaper then Threads also. Just my opinion. I'd like to get both but right now I have other things I need more like my options software for my new Singer PSW 2.0. |

I love Threads. They don't have project directions so much as information on different techniques. Some are very basic, others are quite advanced. Dorothy |

If I could only have one magazine, it would be Threads. However, I love to read about sewing technique more than home dec. or crafts. I have Threads mags from years ago when they covered knitting and beading too. I keep every issue.

I keep all my issues of my magazines also. Even if I'm not interested in a project at the moment I maybe later. Also, if I need ideas for projects I thumb through them from time to time just to get ideas. I have several issues of Threads and Sew News but I subscribed to Clothtide. |

I get all three. I find something in everyone of them that has been very helpful. I have some Sew News from when they were printed on the newspaper stock paper!!!!! I don't get rid of any of my sewing mags. Dh threw 4 of them out once and learned VERY quickly that you don't EVEN THINK of touching them!!!!!!!!!! |

I subscribe to Sew News and Clotilde's Sew Savvy and love them both.. I don't do much high fashion stuff any more so I don't get Threads.. I love the 2 I get.. More down to earth to me.. IMHO...

I have a 2 year subscription to this magazine, and have to say I find something in every issue that makes it worth while. I also get Stitches Mag from Australia, which used to be really good, but has gone downhill recently. Seems to be mostly advertising now, and Wardrobe for a ..... type stuff. That subscription will not be continued when it runs out. Btw, what is Sew News? It's not one I've heard of, probably due to living in New Zealand which seems to be the edge of nowhere for a lot of sewing stuff. I do get a regular thing from someone called Clothilde which seems to be various crafty ideas. Sometimes useful to me, sometimes not. |

Sew News is another sewing mag. Very nice too, not quite as sophisticated and the projects are not as technically difficult. More everyday with lots of advertising too.

I think they all have to have a great deal of ads in order to publish the magazine. I just wish they would put a few more projects in each issue that would appeal to everyone. I'm mostly a jeans and slacks person so I'm not making a lot of suits and skirt type things. I find thread is an elegant sort of magazine. They have nice things, but not everyday wear. I bought my issue of Creative Machine Embroidery yesterday and it's full of ads also. Sometimes that is a good thing for me, because it opens up a lot of retailers that I wouldn't ordinarily get to know about without finding them in the magazine. |

I enjoy the ads almost as much as the articles. I just gave away 5 years of my Threads back issues because of the mold in our basement. (They were not moldy, but were sacrificed, along with most of my stash due to the new no clutter policy in our house). Fortunately, the local library carries them and when my subscription runs out I will just read them there. I am going to try to talk the librarian into subscribing to Sew News too. Talk about withdrawl pains! Melanie

Melanie, are you doing the Fly Lady thing? It is nice to see the ads, especially if they have a website. New resources for almost everything. MaryW

Depends on the type of adds, I love the ones in Threads. Lots of resources, fabrics etc, but in Stitches recently half the pages seem to be pictures from the pattern books. The last one had 2 or 3 pages for each of the main books, and each page had only one or two designs. If this is what I wanted I could purchase the catalogues! |

I really would like to recommend Clotilde's Sew Savvy ... For those who only saw it when it was Sew Savvy (before Clotilde bought in) you will not recognize this as the same publication.. It is like the difference between night and day.. It is fast becoming my favorite.. Each issue is better than the last.. Check it out..

I like threads, but I like SewNews better, so when I decided to cut back on the magazines--too many of them were going unread--I kept SewNews. It just seems to have more things in it that I might want to try. I went through several years of it and pulled out the advertising pages that didn't have anything on the backs that I wanted. I reduced the amount of shelf space they occupied by at least a third, maybe more! Marilynntx

I'm addicted to Threads, I occasionally pick up a copy of Sew Beautiful as well, have been doing some heirloom sewing recently. The pattern section makes the price worth it. I just stopped my subscription to Burda, It was great but pricey ($90 for a year) but I love their patterns.

I have looked at Burda, but I can't afford it! At my age, I do very little of any of my hobbies, except read and listen to CD's, or an occasional design for sewing or jewelry, or a poem, if something sparks my imagination. I'm a lot lazier at 77 than I used to be at 37 or 47! MariLynntx
