I am searching for a new machine to sew upholstery (boat seat covers, canvas tarps, sunbrella fabric etc.), but also to machine quilt. I think that I have narrowed it to the JUKI TL98Q or Brother PQ1500S - but will these be tough enough for the thick fabric I want to sew. On Allbrands.com I found a SMV Power Pro Plus with a 9" gate area but a built in walking foot - I can't find any information on SMV or who manufactures it for them. My main sewing machine is a Kenmore, but now I am wondering if I could upgrade to a newer quilting machine that could handle thick fabric and heavy duty use. Oh, I also looked at a Sailrite industrial machine, but it is not a longer arm. Help! Any advice would be useful. Thanks!!

Have you considered a Pfaff with the built in dual feed? You can also quilt with it. I use my midline mechanical Pfaff for heavy duty sewing all the time. I have done a lot of plastic coated canvas for out door furniture. My Pfaff is the 1530 and it boasts a longer arm. This machine is a workhorse.

Thanks so much. I will look into the Pfaff. I was hoping to find a machine that would do more than just straight stitch, if I am going to buy a new one. Thanks again.
